Mallards Pull off Stunning Comeback, Overcome Fuel in Overtime 3-2
November 29, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Austin Coldwell scored at 4:14 of overtime to complete a stunning comeback that had already seen the host Quad City Mallards (11-7-3) score twice in 19 seconds in the final half minute of regulation to erase a two-goal deficit on the way to a 3-2 victory over the Indy Fuel Sunday.
With the dramatic win, the Mallards took over sole possession of first place in the ECHL's Midwest Division, extended their winning streak to three games and stretched their home winning streak to a league season best eight games.
Coldwell capped off the remarkabkle rally with a fine solo rush. The Mallard defenseman charged deep into the offensive zone and swung around the net to bury the winner.
Matt Neal forced sudden death by tipping in the tying goal with just 11 seconds left in the third period- mere moments after Neal set up Ryan Tesink for the first Mallard goal. Tesink had kept the Mallards' fading hopes alive and cut the gap to 2-1 with a one timer from the high slot at 19:30 of the third. The Mallards scored both of their final minute goals after pulling goaltender Steve Michalek (24 saves) for an extra attacker
Two Alex Lavoie goals appeared to have paved the way for a Fuel victory. Lavoie gave Indy a 1-0 lead on a breakaway at 5:42 of the first period. The Fuel was on the power play when he buried Dylan Clarke's centering feed to make it 2-0 at 8:15 of the third but that seemingly safe two goal lead would somehow slip away.
The Mallards return to action on the road Tuesday night against the Cincinnati Cyclones. The Mallards next play at home Friday, December 18 at 7:05 p.m. against the Wheeling Nailers. The first 1,000 fans through the doors for that game will receive free Mallards winter caps courtesy of KWQC-TV6. December 18 also brings the return of $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X and MetroLINK College Night.
Single game tickets for all Mallards regular season home games- including the December 18 game- are on sale now at the iWireless Center box office, Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com and Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000.
