Nailers at Royals Game Day Snap Shot

November 29, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

Who Needs 5-on-5

The Wheeling Nailers were involved in a special teams showdown on Saturday night, as they played host to the Brampton Beast at WesBanco Arena. Wheeling and Brampton exchanged even strength tallies during the opening six minutes of play, but for the remainder of the night, power plays and penalty kills took over. The Beast were more successful in both aspects, going 3-for-7 on the man advantage, while adding two shorthanded goals. The Nailers posted a 2-for-4 mark on the power play, receiving markers from Zack Torquato and Adam Krause, to complement Jarrett Burton's even strength goal at 2:18 of the first. Brampton ended up with the 6-3 victory, giving Wheeling its first regulation loss at home since November 6th, halting a five-game point streak (4-0-1) in the Ohio Valley.

One to Build On

The Reading Royals picked up a point for the first time in five games on Saturday night, as they also took the ice at home, doing battle with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. After four straight regulation losses, the Royals aimed to turn the tides, as Joe Rehkamp and Robbie Czarnik built 1-0 and 2-1 leads. The Swamp Rabbits rallied back to hop in front by one, but with 1:20 left in regulation, Reading pulled even on Mike Pereira's unassisted goal. The two sides progressed to a shootout, where Greenville's Jack Combs was the only one of five shooters to turn on the red light. Adam Morrison made his third straight start in goal for the Royals, stopping of 26 of 29 shots in the shootout setback.

A Chance to Win the Month

November's schedule will come to an end for the Nailers with Sunday's game in Reading, and with that, Wheeling has a chance to earn its second consecutive month with a winning record. The Nailers went 4-2-0 in six October tilts, and are currently 6-5-1 in their first 12 games of November. The high point of the month was a three-game winning streak, which began with a 4-2 win over Evansville, and carried to a pair of triumphs at Florida. Those three victories were part of a five-game point streak, which also featured a 6-1 home win against the Royals. 2008-09 was the last time Wheeling had back-to-back winning months to start the season, as that year's club started out 20-5-5, before ultimately falling in a deciding seventh playoff game at Cincinnati. With 18 games in the books, the Nailers are 10-7-1 at the quarter poll of the campaign, putting them on pace to record 84 points in the regular season.

They Won't be Around Much

Santander Arena will be a bit of a foreign place for the Royals in the month of December, as Reading will only play two home games during the entire month - a two-game set with the Elmira Jackals on the 18th and 19th. Following Sunday's game against Wheeling, the Royals will travel to Manchester for a three-game series next weekend against the Monarchs, then to Estero for three battles with the Florida Everblades. The month will conclude with four games in six days against the Jackals, Brampton Beast, and Adirondack Thunder. Reading has started the season 2-4-0 on enemy ice, compared to a 6-4-1 mark in Eastern Pennsylvania. The Nailers are 4-4-0 on the road and 6-3-1 at WesBanco Arena, after splitting a pair of games at home this week.

Final One Until February

Sunday afternoon marks the fourth of 11 head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Royals this season, as well as the second of five battles scheduled at Santander Arena. For the second straight year, the home teams have had the early say, as Wheeling has taken 6-1 and 1-0 decisions in West Virginia, while Reading came out on top 2-1 in its back yard. Zack Torquato recorded the lone goal in Wednesday night's 1-0 triumph for the Nailers, which featured a 28-save shutout by Franky Palazzese, who carries a 6-2-0 career mark against the Royals into Sunday's re-match. Adam Morrison nearly matched Palazzese save-for-save, but fell short, while becoming the third Reading netminder to appear in a game against Wheeling this season. After Sunday, the rivals will get a 67-day break from facing each other, with the next scheduled tilt taking place on February 5th at WesBanco Arena.
