Guptill's Hat Trick Helps Evansville Dump Aces 5-3
November 29, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, AK - Alex Guptill's hat trick supplied most of the offense, and Keegan Asmundson and the IceMen defense held on long enough as Evansville dumped Alaska 5-3 Sunday afternoon at the Sullivan Arena.
Guptill had not scored in 8 previous games, but he certainly hit his stride against the Aces, starting the scoring with goal number one at 6:09 of the first period. Alaska answered with Gleason Fournier's third goal in two games at 7:21 on a backhand redirect from Stephen Perfetto and the period ended 1-1, but not before Aces defenseman Patrick Wellar was whistled for a roughing minor and had two more minutes tacked on for disputing the call. Those two penalties would prove to be damaging in the second period.
Guptill struck for his second goal at 1:36 on the power play, then again at 2:01 for his hat trick and the IceMen had a 3-1 lead. Justin McDonald tallied 2:53, and suddenly Evansville had a 4-1 lead after two periods.
Alaska pushed back in the third period, as Fournier scored his second goal of the game on a long wrister, and Collin Valcourt popped in a goal after an excellent feed from Tim Coffman to cut the lead to 4-3. But despite outshooting the IceMen 21-5 in the period, the Aces could not get the equalizer even after pulling goaltender Steven Summerhays. Tyson Fawcett scored a long empty-net goal at 19:59 to seal the deal.
Asmundson finished with 41 saves for his first win of the season, and Summerhays had 21 as Alaska outshot Evansville 44-25 for the game.
The Aces are idle until Wednesday when they entertain division rival Colorado.
