August 9, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Isotopes (64-55) could not overcome a seventh-inning grand slam dropping the series opener to Tacoma (63-56) 6-2. Tony Gwynn Jr. (2-for-3, R, BB) and Alex Castellanos (2-for-4, R, RBI) accounted for Albuquerque's two runs and four of the club's five hits.
Starting pitcher Matt Palmer went six innings for his third consecutive start. The righty gave up two runs on four hits and exited the game with his lowest ERA of the season at 3.66. He also walked four and struck out four.
Albuquerque and Tacoma exchanged runs in the first inning. Abraham Almonte homered to open the game.
Tony Gwynn Jr. walked with two outs in the bottom half and would score without the benefit of a hit. He swiped second for his ninth stolen base of the year, advanced to third on defensive indifference and scored on a wild pitch.
Alex Castellanos belted his 2013 team-leading 17th home run of the season in the second staking the Topes to a 2-1 lead.
Tacoma tied the game in the fifth, but the big blow came in the seventh. Stefen Romero hit an opposite field grand slam breaking the game open 6-2.
Rob Rasmussen (0-7, 6.46) allowed the go-ahead grand slam after entering the game in the seventh and suffered the loss. The southpaw totaled an inning and two-thirds allowing four runs on four hits. Sean White came on in the eighth with two down and recorded the final out without throwing a pitch. He stepped off the mound and threw out Brandon Bantz trying to steal second. He threw 1.1 scoreless frames and picked off a base runner.
Josh Kinney (2-2, 5.96) earned the winning tossing a scoreless sixth inning.
The Isotopes take the field for game two of their four-game series against the Rainiers tomorrow at 7:05 PM MDT. Southpaw Jonathan Sanchez (4-2, 5.09) is slated to take the hill against righty Hector Noesi (3-1, 6.15) of Tacoma. Catch all of the game action on 610 AM "The Sports Animal".
