Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (59-60) dropped the opener of a battle of first place teams, as early miscues and a late two-run homer by Sacramento River Cats (65-54) centerfielder Shane Peterson handed Omaha a 6-4 loss and moved their record below .500 once again.
Right-hander Felipe Paulino made his first ever appearance for the Omaha Storm Chasers as part of his Major League rehab assignment, and in three innings of work allowed four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four. Paulino loaded the bases in the third inning with no outs on a leadoff walk and a pair of base hits, and all three runners came in to score with the final two being plated on a two-out error by the Chasers. Paulino has pitched 11.0 innings in three starts across Northwest Arkansas and Omaha, allowing six runs and totaling 12 strikeouts.
Left-hander Justin Marks followed Paulino and proceeded to toss 5.1 no-hit innings until he gave up a two-out single to shortstop Andy Parrino then the fateful blast after Omaha had come all the way back to tie it at 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning. In his six innings of work on the night Marks fanned 11 River Cats, tying a season high for the Storm Chasers for individual strikeouts originally set by Will Smith on Opening Day (April 4th). Omaha has a league-leading 989 punch-outs on the year, on pace to set a new PCL record at 1,205.
Right-fielder Paulo Orlando drove in two runs during a three-run rally for Omaha in the sixth, and the Brazilian outfielder has a team-leading 19 RBI since the start of July. Third baseman Irving Falu singled in the third inning to extend his on-base streak to 28 games, the longest for any Chaser this season and second longest in the PCL (longest is 29 games by Nashville's Scooter Gennett).
The Storm Chasers will look to rebound in the second game of the series as they send out hard-throwing right-hander Yordano Ventura (3-3, 4.07), who has allowed only one run in six of his ten appearances for Omaha this season. Ventura will face off right River Cats left-hander Andrew Werner (10-12, 5.99) with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
