Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Nashville Sounds (47-72) scored five unearned runs in the top of the ninth to snap a 1-1 tie and take game one of the four-game series with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (56-60) 6-1 on Thursday evening. The loss was the seventh in a row for the Sky Sox and their 14th loss in their last 16 games.
A one hour and fifty-eight minute rain delay held up the start of the game and occurred right as the team's were about to take the field. As a result, both team's regularly scheduled starting pitchers were scratched when the game finally started. Cory Riordan was replaced by lefty Nick Schmidt who turned in a solid outing. Schmidt worked 3.2 innings and gave up just three hits, including a solo home run to Blake Lalli, one run and struck out four.
For the Sounds, lefty Zack Kroenke made a superb emergency start in place of R.J. Seidel as he tossed six shutout innings while surrendering just two hits and one walk while striking out four.
Lalli's second inning homer gave Nashville a 1-0 lead until the seventh when the Sounds bullpen surrendered the tying run on a pinch-hit double by Ryan Wheeler. It was Wheeler's team-leading 68th RBI on the season.
In the ninth, Mitchell Boggs (0-2) walked the leadoff batter and a fielding error by Josh Rutledge and a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt loaded the bases. Boggs struck out Josh Prince but a fielding error by first baseman Ben Paulsen on a high chopper allowed the go-ahead run to score and make it 2-1. Nashville tacked on four more unearned runs on a two-run double by Blake Davis, a sac fly by Ozzie Chavez and an RBI single by Kentrail Davis to finish off the scoring at 6-1. The five runs made a winner of Kyle Heckathorn (8-3).
Game two of the four-game set is scheduled for tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. RH Armando Galarraga (0-1, 9.39) will take the mound for the Sky Sox against the Sounds' LH Aaron Laffey (1-2, 5.13).
