Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced Friday that Lance Berkman will be the latest major league rehab assignment on the Triple-A Round Rock Express roster, joining the E-Train squad at Dell Diamond August 10.
Berkman was placed on the 15-day DL on July 7 with left hip inflammation. He was batting .254 (62-for-244) with six home runs and 34 RBI through 68 games at the time of his departure. Berkman was leading the team with 61 starts as a designated hitter.
He played in just 32 games with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012 due to two right knee surgeries that limited his playing time. The six-time All-Star spent parts of 12 seasons with the Houston Astros before joining the New York Yankees to finish out 2010. In 2011, he helped the St. Louis Cardinals to the World Series championship, batting .423 against the Rangers in the World Series. Berkman signed with Texas on January 7, 2013 as a free agent with a club option that can vest for 2014.
Berkman joins RHP Neftali Feliz, LHP Matt Harrison and LHP Michael Kirkman as the four Rangers currently rehabbing with the Express.
The Express continues a four-game series with the Salt Lake Bees Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Right-hander Scott Richmond (4-5, 5.32 ERA) will take the mound for Round Rock, while Salt Lake sends Jarrett Grube (5-5, 4.48 ERA) to the hill. Saturday's game will be followed by the final St. David's Summer Concert Series performance as the Spazmatics take the stage in center field following the final out. It will also be 80's Night at Dell Diamond as fans are encourage to wear their 80's attire for the chance to participate in a costume contest for a prize pack that includes an autographed Ron Washington baseball.
