Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Las Vegas, Nev. - The Las Vegas 51s put an end to the Oklahoma City RedHawks' 12-game winning streak by putting up 12 runs in a 12-3 win before 3,750 at Cashman Field Thursday night.
It was the first loss for Oklahoma City (68-51) in exactly two weeks since they fell 2-1 in 12 innings in a game in Omaha on July 25.
For just the third time in 13 games, the RedHawks did not score first. With one out in the bottom of the second inning, Matt den Dekker tripled and Brandon Hicks followed with an RBI double to give Las Vegas a 1-0 lead.
The 51s added to their lead in the third inning with a two-out RBI double by Jamie Hoffmann. At the time, the two-run deficit was the largest the RedHawks faced during the streak.
Las Vegas continued to extend the lead in the fifth inning. After having none on and two outs, the 51s had seven straight batters reach base safely, scoring four times in the process. den Dekker notched a two-run single to bring home the first two runs. A bases loaded walk and a wild pitch scored the others.
Trailing 6-0 the RedHawks got back into it with one big swing. Brandon Laird swatted a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning to pull the RedHawks within 6-3.
The RedHawks loaded the bases with one out in the seventh with a chance to get closer, but the 51s were able to get out of the inning unscathed to maintain a three-run lead.
On the first pitch of the bottom of the inning, Hicks hit a solo homer off the light pole in the left field to make it 7-3.
In the eighth, the RedHawks again loaded the bases with one out, but could not score. The 51s put the game away in the bottom of the inning with five runs. Hicks went deep for the second time, and his two-run shot made it 12-3.
RedHawks pitcher Asher Wojciechowski had a rare off night and only could get through 4.2 innings. Wojciechowski (7-5) was charged with six runs and seven hits. After allowing no walks in his previous two starts, Wojciechowki walked five and struck out six.
It was Wojciechowski's second-shortest start of the year and was the first time in 13 outings he did not pitch at least 5.2 innings.
Overall it was a tough night for the pitching staff. The 12 runs allowed tied a season high, as did the 11 walks issued.
Las Vegas starting pitcher Jacob deGrom took home the win. He allowed three runs (none earned) and six hits over 6.1 innings. deGrom (4-2) struck out six with one walk.
The RedHawks and 51s continue their series Friday night at 9:05 p.m. central time. Live coverage begins at 8:35 p.m. on AM 1340 "The Game," 1340thegame.com, or through the free IHeartRadio mobile app.
