Syracuse Leads from Start to Finish in 5-3 Win at Buffalo on Wednesday Night

Buffalo, NY - The Syracuse Mets won their third straight game with a 5-3 win against the Buffalo Bisons on Wednesday night at Sahlen Field. Both teams missed opportunities as each side left 13 runners on base.

Syracuse (26-38) got off to an excellent start, scoring twice in the top of the first to race out to an early lead. It took the Mets exactly three batters to get on the scoreboard. Danny Mendick singled on the first pitch of the ballgame, and after Ronny Mauricio flied out, Luke Voit took a hanging breaking ball and crushed it over the left-field wall for a two-run blast and a 2-0 Syracuse lead. It was the first homer for Voit as a member of the Mets organization. The long-time Major Leaguer has hit 95 career MLB home runs in 508 career games at the Big League level entering this week. In fact, Voit led the Major Leagues with 22 home runs in the shortened 2020 season.

Buffalo (29-36) got a run back in the bottom of the first, scoring a run with two outs to creep a little closer. First, Otto Lopez singled with one out and moved up to second on a two-out walk from Davis Schneider. The next batter, Jordan Luplow, laced a sharp single into center field to score the speedy Lopez easily and make it a 2-1 game.

In the top of fourth, the Mets scored two more times to increase their lead to three at 4-1. First, Syracuse loaded up the bases with nobody out when Jonathan Araúz and Jaylin Davis singled followed by a Luke Ritter walk to fill up the bags. The next batter, Nick Meyer, drew a walk to bring home one run for a 3-1 edge. Mendick promptly bounced into a double play, but it did score Davis and complete the inning's scoring at 4-1.

In the bottom half of the fourth, the Bisons got a run back via an unforced error by the Mets. With two outs and nobody on base, LJ Talley hit a frozen-rope line drive that sailed over the head of Mendick in right field and rolled all the way to the wall for a triple. On the relay back into the infield, Mauricio threw the ball away down the third-base line for an error, allowing Talley to score and make it a 4-2 game.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bisons looked primed to tie up the game, loading up the bases with a one-out single from Wynton Bernard coupled with walks to Talley and Tanner Morris. However, from there, Zach Muckenhirn buckled down. The reliever for the Mets retired the next two batters via a strikeout and a groundout to escape the inning unscathed. Muckenhirn went on to work a scoreless seventh inning as well, continuing what has been downright excellent pitching performance for Muckenhirn with Syracuse so far this season. The left-hander has allowed just three earned runs in 26 and one-thirds innings with the Syracuse Mets, good for a 1.03 ERA in 13 overall appearances.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Bisons plated a run when Bernard singled and Talley doubled to make it 5-3, but Buffalo did not score again as the Mets earned their second win in as many days to start the series. The Bisons had 11 total hits in the game yet managed just the three runs by leaving 13 total runners on base. The Mets also left 13 runners on base in the game on just six hits. Syracuse batters drew nine walks in the game and three batters were also hit by pitches.

Syracuse is on the road for a two-week road trip, starting all this week with six games in Buffalo. Game three of the six-game series is set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Thursday night. Left-hander David Peterson is slated to start for the Mets.
