LAST TIME OUT

MOOSIC, PA (July 15, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Vejigantes (43-46) were defeated by the Louisville Murcielagos 8-3 on Saturday evening. Josh Breaux, Phillip Evans and Oswald Peraza each homered for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the loss.

Louisville struck first in the game's opening frame against Vejigantes' starter Jhony Brito. Major League rehabber Aristides Aquino and Cristian Santana drove home one run each as part of a four-hit first. Brito allowed four runs over 2.2 innings with four strikeouts in his shortest outing of the season.

The Vejigantes answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of solo home runs. Peraza went deep to left for his 12th big fly of the year and Breaux drove one to left-center to tie the game at two apiece. Breaux is batting 11-for-24 with two home runs and five RBI over his first seven Triple-A appearances. The Murcielagos retook the lead with a pair of tallies in the third. Chris Okey brought in one of the runs as part of a 2-for-5 night. Louisville then padded their lead with four more runs over the next two innings to jump ahead 8-2. Every member of the Murcielagos' starting nine logged at least one hit in the game.

Phillip Evans cut the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre deficit to 8-3 with a deep blast to left off Louisville starting pitcher Justin Nicolino. Evans is 13-for-35 at the plate (.371 average) in July. Nicolino allowed three runs in his seven frames of work with a season-high six punchouts. Shane Greene and Braden Bristo combined to pitch 4.1 scoreless innings out of the Vejigantes' bullpen in the 8-3 final. Nicolino (2-3) earned the win for the Murcielagos. Brito (4-2) was saddled with the loss for SWB.

NEWS & NOTES

FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome the Louisville bats for their first trip to PNC Field since July 19-21, 2019 (Louisville won series 2-1). The Bats are just the second western division team the RailRiders have faced this year, the other being the Toledo Mud Hens (split series 3-3 in Ohio).

VEJIGANTE VENGEANCE - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has played in two Copa de la Diversión contests this season as their alternate moniker, the Vejigantes. SWB has lost both of those games: last night 8-3 and on June 4 against Lehigh Valley 2-1.

FINISH STRONG - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre looks to finish the proverbial first-half just two games under .500 (44-46). The team was a season-worst seventeen games under the .500 mark at 19-36 on June 8, putting them 15.5 games back of first while holding last place in the IL East. Since June 8, the RailRiders have gone 24-10.

HOME COOKIN' - Entering Sunday, the RailRiders have won 13 of their last 17 home games dating back to June 14.

REMATCH! - Today Clarke Schmidt will oppose Justin Dunn, just as the two starters did during Tuesday's series opener. It's the first time since a six-game series with Rochester saw Hayden Wesneski and Sterling Sharp square off for the opener on June 14 and the final game of the series on June 19. The RailRiders won both of those games.

HIGHWAY ROBBERY - Since July 7, Rob Brantly has gone 8-for-11 with every hit being a single. He has driven in two runs in a three game span. His three-hit performance on Friday was his first game in six days (July 9).

PHIL OF THE FUTURE - Phillip Evans has been hot recently. In the month of July, Evans is batting .371, going 13-for-35. He has also walked eight times in the last eleven games. The California native is on an eleven-game on-base streak and has hits in ten of his last thirteen games.

WADE, WADE, COME BACK WADE - Tyler Wade made his 2022 RailRiders debut on Saturday, picking up a single in the fifth inning as a part of a 1-for-4 performance. Wade, who was recently traded back to the Yankees organization from the Angels, played 255 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to yesterday. The single was his first RailRiders hit since August 15, 2019 while at Charlotte. It was his first RailRiders game at PNC Filed since August 11, 2019 while facing the Gwinnett Stripers.

FUUUUTUUUURE - Yesterday's Future's Game in Los Angeles saw three Yankee farm hands. Jasson Dominguez launched a two-run home run in a 1-for-2 day. Anthony Volpe went hitless in two trips. Our own Ken Waldichuk came in to record the save with a flyout in the seventh. He doesn't have a single save opportunity in his career. The American League won 6-4.

ON DECK - The RailRiders are playing their final game before the All-Star Break begins Monday. They return to action on the road on July 22 against Lehigh Valley to start nine-straight road games. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will not return home until August 2 to host the Buffalo Bisons.

STREAKY -Greg Weissert has not been charged with a run in twelve straight appearances, the longest stretch for any RailRiders pitcher this season... Jimmy Cordero is on a five-game scoreless streak... Shane Greene is on a five-game scoreless streak...Phillip Evans is on an eleven-game on-base streak...

SHUT 'EM OUT, SHUT 'EM DOWN - The RailRiders won 9-0 on Friday. It was their eighth shutout victory of their season and matched their biggest victory by run differential, nine (four times). In their three wins in this series this week, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is outscoring Louisville 26-3 and hold a 1.00 ERA in those games.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (63-28) pummeled the Boston Red Sox 14-1. The Yankees' 63 wins are their most before the All-Star break in franchise history. Aaron Judge's second HR of the night marked his 33rd HR of the season, tying Roger Maris for the most homers by a Yankee prior to the All-Star break (33 HR in 1961). Gerrit Cole will face Chris Sale in the finale today at 1:35 PM... The Somerset Patriots (53-33) downed the Portland Sea Dogs 7-3. Sean Boyle matched career-highs with seven innings and nine strikeouts. He allowed just two hits of scoreless baseball. The two wrap up the series today at 1:00 PM... The Hudson Valley Renegades (47-39) walked off in ten innings 5-4 against the Greenville Drive. Eric Wagaman delivered the winning knock with a single. Josue Panacual takes the ball at 2:05 PM today... The Tampa Tarpons (39-45) were rained out again on Saturday, just as they were on Thursday. The Tarpons and Daytona Tortugas play a doubleheader today starting at 11:00 AM...
