
IronPigs Secure Series Win, Division Lead in Grand Style

(Charlotte, N.C.) - The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (49-41) secured a series win and sole possession of first place heading into the All-Star break on Sunday as they defeated the Charlotte Knights (33-57) 6-3. Josh Ockimey had five RBI in the game, including a grand slam. Cristopher Sanchez (2-0) pitched five scoreless innings to help set the tone for the afternoon.
The IronPigs were able to give Sanchez a two-run cushion in the top of the first inning as they took a 2-0 lead against Davis Martin (3-3). Donny Sands hit an RBI single that scored Scott Kingery and Ockimey hit a sacrifice fly that scored Nick Maton.
Sanchez faced a total of 17 batters, retiring 13 of them. He only gave up four singles during his five innings on the mound. He struck out five batters in total. Ofreidy Gomez and Jeff Singer each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to follow Sanchez.
Ockimey hit a grand slam against Brandon Finnegan in the top of the seventh inning that extended Lehigh Valley's lead to 6-0. It was the third grand slam hit by an IronPigs batter this season. Charlotte scored a run against James Dykstra in the bottom of the eighth inning as Xavier Fernandez scored on a wild pitch.
Fernandez hit a two-run home run against Jonathan Hennigan in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut Lehigh Valley's lead to 6-3. Jakob Hernandez entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the inning then struck out Adam Haseley to earn his second save of the season.
The IronPigs have the next four days off due to the All-Star Break. They resume play on Friday, July 22 at 7:05 p.m. against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at Coca-Cola Park. Tickets are available for purchase at ironpigsbaseball.com.
