Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (45-44) put up their first homer of the series in the first and opened a 6-0 lead for Omaha. The Rochester Red Wings (47-43) tied the game in the eighth before Omaha exploded for seven more in the top of the ninth to secure the 13-7 win. The Chasers and Red Wings split the series 3-3 as the only time these two teams will see each other this season.
Designated hitter Drew Waters hit a single on the game's first pitch and stole second on the next pitch to record a hit in each of his first six games since being traded from Atlanta on Monday.
Shortstop Iván Castillo drew a walk before center fielder Dairon Blanco juiced the bases with a slow roller that would go down as an infield hit to the third baseman. First baseman Angelo Castellano cleared the bases with a grand slam, the fifth time this season the Chasers have hit a grand slam.
Right fielder John Rave hit his first career Triple-A homer to keep the rally going. Left fielder Jimmy Govern hit his second triple of the season before catcher William Hancock hit a ground rule double to put Omaha ahead 6-0 heading into the bottom of the first. In all, Omaha sent 10 batters to the plate and recorded six hits in the frame.
The Red Wings came to bat for the bottom of the frame and pounced on right-hander Daniel Mengden. Mengden gave up a two-run homer that cut Omaha's lead to just four after one inning.
Rochester put up another two-spot in the third, putting the score at 6-4 in favor of the Storm Chasers.
After retiring the Chasers batters in order in the third, fourth, and fifth, the Red Wings put a run up in the fifth to cut Omaha's lead at just one.
Mengden would go 5.0 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with one strikeout and no walks in the no decision.
With two away in the sixth Hancock was hit by a pitch to put a runner on base for the first time since the second inning. Hancock would end up stranded to leave the score in favor of Omaha 6-5.
Right-hander Stephen Woods Jr. struck out two of the three batters he faced in his Storm Chasers debut after being assigned to Triple-A Omaha from Double-A Northwest Arkansas before this series.
The Red Wings came out in the bottom of the eighth and tied the game. Rochester first baseman Joey Menses hit his second home run of the game to leadoff the frame, this time off RHP Zach Willeman.
Leading off the ninth, Govern hit a double to left field as the first Chaser to record a hit since the second inning. Third baseman Rubendy Jaquez recorded his first hit at the Triple-A level in the form of an RBI triple to retake the lead for the Storm Chasers. Castillo and Blanco drew back-to-back walks with two outs to load the bases.
Cancel scored a pair of runners with a single before Castellano recorded his first five-RBI game this season with a single. Rave hit his second homer of the game to give Omaha the 13-6 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
The Red Wings started their last chance with a homer, but right-hander Brad Peacock responded to close out the series with a 13-7 win.
The Storm Chasers will be off the next few days but will resume action next week for a four-game series with the Iowa Cubs. The first game of that series is scheduled for Friday at 7:05 p.m. with coverage starting at 6:45 on the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone.
In the game, Omaha will be wearing Marvel's Defenders of the Diamond, Black Panther themed Jerseys. Friday is also part of the Fireworks Friday series presented by Hy-Vee.
