MOOSIC, PA (April 29, 2019) -- The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell to the Rochester Red Wings in the series opener Monday night, 10-6. The Red Wings took an early lead in the contest with a triple on a line drive in the top of the third and a run by Drew Maggi, who scored on a LaMonte Wade sacrifice fly to right Fielder Trey Amburgey who made it a close play at the plate, but the throw was a little late in getting to Ryan Lavarnway at home.

The RailRiders retaliated with Cliff Pennington's sac fly to left fielder Ronald Torreyes, putting a tally on the board when Billy Burns touched home to make it 2-1. One inning later Luke Raley homered on a line drive to right center field for Rochester in the top of the fourth, bringing the score to 3-1.

The score remained the same until the seventh inning when Torreyes, the third batter of the frame, knocked a three-run home run into the left field bullpen extending the Red Wings lead, 6-1. Rochester went on to score twice more in the inning and take an 8-1 lead.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored 5 runs in the seventh, including a Trey Amburgey grand slam, to make it 8-6. Rochester remained on top throughout the eighth inning despite Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's attempt at a comeback, adding to its lead with a pair of run-scoring walks in the frame to make it 10-6. After opening up a four-run advantage, Rochester's bullpen retired the final six men it faced to secure the win.

NOT A GREEN TRIPLE-A PITCHER: RHP Chad Green threw the first two innings Monday (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0R, BB, 5 K) against the Rochester Red Wings with LHP Nestor Cortes follow beginning in the 3rd inning, and the big leaguer looked dominant. Green was optioned to the RailRiders roster over the weekend and had last pitched in the minors in 2017 as he was getting ready to rejoin the Yankees out of Spring Training. That year, he was still being used as a starting pitcher, pitching in 5G/5GS for the RailRiders and going 2-1 with a 4.73 ERA over 26.2 IP. The year prior was when Green jumped on radars with 16G/16GS for SWB in which he posted a 1.52 ERA and struck out 100 batters in 94.2 IP with just a .200 BAA.

A MODEST STRETCH: INF Gosuke Katoh hit safely in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader to extend a recent hot stretch to a 6G hitting streak in which he has batted 12-for-22 (.545 AVG). It raised his season average to .364 which was 8th in the International League entering Monday night, but fell to .339. Thanks to his team-best 5 HR and ability to walk, he also began the week 7th in the league in OBP (.435) and 4th in slugging (.673) which gave him the 2nd best OPS in the league at 1.108 -- just a few points behind Louisville's Josh Van Meter (1.110) for the league lead.

NOW YOU HAVE CC'N HIM IN TRIPLE-A: As a corresponding move to LHP CC Sabathia returning from the Injured List in the big leagues two weeks ago, RHP Jonathan Loaisiga was transferred to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 24-year old Nicaraguan made his Triple-A debut with SWB in Game 1 of a doubleheader 4/17 against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and yet has still has made almost as many appearances in the MLB (12G/6GS) as he has in full-season Minor League Baseball (15G/15GS with Charleston/Tampa/Trenton/SWB). In a pair of starts this season for the Yankees, Loaisiga has a 3.86 ERA (3R/3ER in 7.0 IP) including his first start of the season 4/3 @ Detroit where he allowed just 1H over 4.0 IP. His most recent appearance came out of the bullpen against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 4/24 in which he picked up the win in a 6-5 comeback victory by the Yankees.

A TALE OF TWO SEASONS: The new MLB baseballs being used in Triple-A starting this year has been a discussion piece among players, fans and media members alike in 2019. Please open the PDF version of the game notes to see after a month of play how the April numbers compare.
