Louisville Bats News Release

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Louisville Bats (10-16) dropped Tuesday night's contest against the Toledo Mud Hens (9-15) by a 5-2 score at Fifth Third Field. Louisville was held hitless until the seventh inning, a night after scoring a season-high 15 runs.

Toledo started the scoring early off Bats starting pitcher, right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne (1-2, 5.22), scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Louisville's offense would stay dormant for almost the entire game, manufacturing a run in the fourth to cut the 2-0 deficit in half with two walks and an RBI groundout from Rob Refsnyder. Mud Hens starting pitcher Kyle Funkhouser (0-3, 7.64) only lasted 4.0 innings and got a no-decision, but was effective while in the game, with the former University of Louisville hurler striking out seven Bats and not allowing a hit.

Despaigne gave up five runs in 6.0 innings, but only three of the runs were earned, recording the Bats' first quality start since Keury Mella threw seven shutout innings against the Indianapolis Indians on April 21.

The Bats were held hitless until one out in the seventh inning, when Refsnyder tripled off Toledo reliever Caleb Thielbar, down 5-1. Refsnyder came around to score on a Juan Graterol sacrifice fly, making the score 5-2, which would be the final. Left-hander Cody Reed and Anthony Bass each threw scoreless innings out of the Louisville bullpen.

Despite the relatively uneventful final game of the month, the Bats set new records for the month of April with 31 home runs as a team, and an individual record with Josh VanMeter pacing the International League with 11 home runs and 28 RBI, not to mention a plethora of other offensive statistics, which set new Bats records.

The Bats will try to win their third series of the season tomorrow in the Wednesday morning rubber match, with first pitch scheduled for 10:35 a.m. Right-hander Lucas Sims (1-0, 5.48) will look to have a bounce-back performance against Toledo, who expects to start southpaw Tyler Alexander (0-2, 8.64).
