Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

ZEBULON, N.C. - The first game of the Jacksonville Suns and Carolina Mudcats series was suspended due to the Southern League curfew rule going into the eleventh inning with the game tied 5-5 early Tuesday morning.

The game will be resumed on Tuesday night at 6:15 p.m. with the Suns coming to the plate in the top of the eleventh in a 5-5 tie. Tuesday's second game of the series will be played as scheduled at 7:15 p.m. unless the first game goes late.

The Mudcats took an early lead with Yasmani Grandal's RBI double in the first to go up 1-0. Jacksonville tied the game in the fourth with a Chris Gutierrez RBI single to even the score at one. Jim Negrych broke the tie in the top of the fifth with a leadoff solo home run to right field to put the Suns ahead 2-1.

With a runner and third and one out in the top of the fifth, the game was delayed due to rain and storms in Zebulon. The rain delay lasted an hour and 56 minutes before play was resumed at 10:35 p.m. After play resumed, Denis Phipps hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth that put the Mudcats ahead 3-2.

The Suns tied the game at three in the top of the eighth on a RBI double by Gutierrez.

After playing 17 innings the night before, once again the Suns went into extra innings after the game was tied at three. Once again Gutierrez came up big for the Suns in the top of the tenth, hitting his second RBI double of the night to put the Suns ahead 4-3. Jacksonville added another run in the tenth as Negrych drew a bases loaded walk to go on top 5-3.

Gutierrez ended his night 3-4 with three runs batted in, and two doubles in one of his top nights at the plate this season.

However in the bottom of the tenth with the Mudcats down to their last strike, Carolina's Henry Rodriguez hit a two-RBI single that scored two runs to tie the game at five. Chris Hatcher struck out Felix Perez to end the inning just past 12:50 a.m. which is the league curfew for starting a new inning, ending the night in a suspended draw.

Following the resumed game, the Suns and Mudcats will play the second game of the four-game series at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night. Left-handed pitcher and former Mudcat Graham Taylor (2-3, 3.95 ERA) will pitch for the Suns against Carolina's right-hander Brandon Hynick (0-1, 8.10 ERA). Tuesday's first pitch is set for 7:15 p.m., and fans can listen to the game beginning at 7:00 p.m. with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
