HOOVER, Ala. - Left-hander Tom Layne struck out eight in his return to the BayBears as they sailed past the Birmingham Barons on Independence Day at Regions Park with a 5-2 victory to open a four-game series.

Layne (1-0) was provided a boost by the BayBears (46-36, 8-4) in the top of the third as Ollie Linton led off by reaching on a two-base error off the mitt of first baseman Seth Loman. Two batters later, A.J. Pollock singled Linton to the dish, putting the BayBears on the board.

After Paul Goldschmidt was hit by a pitch, Ryan Wheeler fouled a popup down the third base line that third baseman Jake Oester overran, giving Wheeler new life. Wheeler executed on the next pitch from Nevin Griffith (5-4), singling to right, driving home Pollock and Goldschmidt.

Two more runs came to the plate for the BayBears in the fourth as Ed Easley, Jake Elmore and Linton all singled with one away. Easley dashed to the dish on a Griffith wild pitch while Adam Eaton bounced out to first, bringing home Elmore to make it 5-0.

Birmingham (47-35, 7-5) finally got to Layne in the sixth as Brandon Short singled and moved up a base when Christian Marrero was hit by a pitch. Layne was pulled with two outs, but Josh Ellis surrendered a run on Layne's behalf as Justin Greene smashed a two-out single to score Short.

Ellis retired the next four batters he faced before Clay Zavada tossed a perfect bottom of the eighth. Zavada uncorked a run in the ninth as Oester doubled in Jared Price to finish the scoring. Alden Carrithers flied out to Eaton in right, ending the ballgame.

The BayBears continue their four-game road series on Tuesday night at 7:05 with right-hander Wes Roemer (5-4) starting against lefty Charlie Leesman (7-1).
