South Carolina NASCAR Greats to be Honored at Fluor Field
Published on July 5, 2011 under Southern League (SL1) News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive announced today that NASCAR Hall of Fame stand outs David Pearson, Bud Moore and Cotton Owens will be celebrated at Fluor Field before and during the July 13th game at Fluor Field. Pearson and Moore were inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame earlier this year and Owens is on the ballot for 2012 membership as well. The NASCAR greats will be on hand pregame to greet fans and sign autographs before taking the field to throw the Honorary First Pitch and serve as Honorary Captains.
Pearson, a.k.a. the Silver Fox, was named by Sports Illustrated as the "Driver of the Century", with 3 Cup titles and the second best record of wins in the history of the sport. Moore, a decorated World War II veteran, was a highly successful Sprint Cup owner whose cars attracted the NASCAR's top drivers over 37 seasons, wining 63 premier races and finishing 293 and 463 times respectively among the top 5 and top 10. Owens, known as "the King of the Modifieds", achieved NASCAR fame as a driver, a team owner and a mechanic. He was named as one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers during NASCAR's 50th Anniversary celebration in 1998, and is a member of the NASCAR Mechanics Hall of Fame. All three NASCAR greats are residents of Spartanburg where they have continued their long friendships with each other and their hometown community.
Drive Co-Owner and President, Craig Brown, commented on the celebration of these Upstate heroes, noting, "We are delighted and honored to have the privilege of recognizing these great sports heroes and native sons who have reached the very top in the highly competitive world of NASCAR racing. These men's careers and accomplishments are a remarkable testimony to the kind of commitment, courage and drive that has brought so much success and satisfaction to individuals throughout this region of the country."
Drive General Manager, Mike deMaine, remarked on the July 13th celebration, saying, "This is going to be a very special evening for Drive fans and NASCAR fans from across the Upstate, and beyond. Few sports have a deeper legacy or more faithful following than racing and baseball, and we are excited to be able to provide a world class event like this for all of these sports enthusiasts." deMaine added, "Before and during the game our honored guests and their amazing careers will be celebrated in a number of exciting and meaningful ways, and we will have a number of NASCAR related features and attractions for fans to enjoy as well."
In addition having NASCAR Hall of Famers Pearson, Moore and Owens on hand, the evening at Fluor Field will feature a number of other NASCAR attractions, including local short track NASCAR drivers and their cars, information and exhibits from the NASCAR Hall of Fame and Museum, and more. All fans sporting NASCAR attire will have the opportunity to win tickets to the upcoming Sprint Cup Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 15th.
Great seats still remain for the July 13th game at Fluor Field, and prices start at just $5! For more information or to purchase tickets to help celebrate South Carolina's NASCAR legends, visit the Fluor Field Box Office, call charge-by-phone at (864) 240-4528, or log onto GreenvilleDrive.com.
