JACKSON GENERALS RECAP: - The Mississippi Braves created fireworks during Monday night's 10-1 thrashing of the Jackson Generals.The Braves top six batters provided all 13 hits and eight of the 10 runs scored. The M-Braves did strand 13 runners on base during the Independence Day game. Jackson committed three errors for the second straight night. The nine-run margin of defeat was the largest this season for the Generals. Rich Poythress, Brandon Bantz and Joe Dunigan had two hits Monday night for the Generals. Poythress has a three-game hitting streak and has hit in 11 of his last 13 games. Tyler Pastornicky and Mycal Jones, the top two batters for Mississippi had three hits each and combined for three doubles, four runs and an RBI. Ernesto Mejia was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI's while Willie Cabrera finished 3-for-5 with three RBI's. Kenshin Kawakami (2-3) won his first game since April 17th Monday night, tossing six shutout innings against the Generals. The Japanese righty struck out two and walked four. Steven Hensley (0-4) suffered the loss in his second start back from the disabled list. Hensley surrendered four runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking three. Luis Avilan saved his first game of the season pitching the final four innings for the M-Braves, giving up one run.
AT A GLANCE: Rich Poythress is batting .400 (18x45) with 4 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 triple and 5 RBI. Vinnie Catricala is batting .368 (7x19) with 2 homeruns and 7 RBI's, hitting in 3 of his first 5 Double-A games.
TODAY'S STARTER: RHP Tom Wilhelmsen makes his 8th start of the season tonight against the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park. Wilhelmsen made his debut with the Generals against the Braves in relief on May 19th tossing 2 scoreless frames. Tom finished the month of June 1-3, with a 4.20 ERA in 6 starts. He is 1-1, with a 3.18 ERA on the road this season.
ALUMNI REPORT: Former Jackson pitcher Michael Pineda is the first rookie pitcher in club history to record 100 strikeouts prior to the All-Star break (has 106).Mark Langston held the previous record with 84 strikeouts in 1984.his 8 wins (8-5, 2.58) are 3rd-most among Mariners rookies pre-All-Star break.over the last 25 years only 3 other rookies have recorded as many strikeouts as Pineda before the All-Star Game, Kerry Wood (139 in 1998), Daisuke Matsuzaka (123 in 2007) and Hideo Nomo (119 in 1995).
PANKOVITS WINS 750: In the team's second try, Generals Manager Jim Pankovits earned his 750th career managerial victory Sunday. This is Jim's first season with the Mariners and Generals and 13th season as a Minor League skipper. Pankovits managed the New York Penn League Affiliate for the Houston Astros, Tri City the previous two seasons, winning the title in 2010.
BURNIN THE ROAD: The Generals are making their 3rd trip this season to Trustmark Park. The Generals are 5-5 on the road against the Braves and 7-8 overall against the Double-A Affiliate for Atlanta. Jackson plays Mississippi a total of 24 times this season.
TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1998 - Roger Clemens became the 11th pitcher in baseball history to notch 3,000th strikeouts. 1987 - Mark McGwire became the first rookie to hit 30 homers before the All-Star break and Jose Canseco homered twice, leading Oakland to a 6-3 victory over Boston.
