HOOVER, Ala. - A six-run second blazed the trail for the BayBears on Tuesday night at Regions Park as they trounced the Birmingham Barons 10-2 to secure their fourth consecutive victory and eighth in their last nine tries.
Wes Roemer (6-4) tossed five frames as he won his second straight start. He was touched up for a couple of runs in the bottom of the first as the Barons (47-36, 7-6) had their first two batters reach with singles. Christian Marrero walked with one out to load the bags while Josh Phegley put Birmingham on top with a two-run single to score Alden Carrithers and Jose Martinez.
In the second, the BayBears (47-36, 9-4) would get those runs back and then some against left-hander Charlie Leesman (7-2). Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs before Jake Elmore hit a bouncer to third. Jake Oester fielded cleanly but threw wide left of the plate, allowing Taylor Harbin and Josh Ford to score the tying runs.
After Ollie Linton was hit by a pitch, Adam Eaton brought Ed Easley home with a slow chopper to third, giving the BayBears a 3-2 lead. A.J. Pollock's two-run single and Ryan Wheeler's run-scoring groundout polished off a six-run inning.
Leesman made it through five before Charlie Shirek entered and coughed up four more tallies. Pollock singled Linton to the dish in the sixth to make it 7-2. Paul Goldschmidt ripped a two-bagger down the left-field line in the eighth to drive home Eaton while Wheeler and Harbin both followed with RBI groundouts to finish the scoring.
Bryan Henry (S, 2) relieved Roemer in the sixth and finished the contest with three-hit shutout ball over the final four frames. Former BayBear Leyson Septimo appeared for the Barons in the top of the ninth and worked a scoreless innings with one hit allowed and one walk.
The BayBears continue their four-game road series on Wednesday night at 7:05 with left-hander Patrick Corbin (6-5) starting against righty Terry Doyle (3-2).
