Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC --- Neither the Jacksonville Suns nor the Carolina Mudcats could declare their independence in the series opener at Five County Stadium on July 4th, as the game spilled over into July 5th and was played to a 10-inning suspended draw before a crowd of over 7,000.

The Mudcats, who had played three straight 10-inning games, met the weary Suns, who played a 17-inning marathon on Sunday night with both teams arriving in the Triangle after 6am ET. Monday's game was suspended in the fifth for nearly two hours thanks to rain, and as the storm passed, the Mudcats front office darkened the lights and treated the fans to the promised post-game fireworks extravaganza on the 4th of July. The game did resume at 10:35 PM ET with the Suns leading 2-1 before Denis Phipps hit a two-run homer to put Carolina ahead.

The Suns would tie the game and ultimately the game was forced into extra innings. Jacksonville scored twice in the 10th against Tim Hamulack, however with the Southern League curfew approaching, Henry Rodriguez singled to center to tie the game as the clock hit 12:50 AM. After Felix Perez fanned, the game was suspended by league curfew rules stipulate.

The game will be resumed on Tuesday night at 6:15 PM ET, followed by a nine-inning regulation game.
