
Strong Third Lifts Wolves Over Rivermen

The Chicago Wolves broke a 1-1 tie with three goals in a stretch of 3:56 of the third period to top the Peoria Rivermen, 5-2, Saturday night at the Allstate Arena. The contest ended a stretch of six games in eight nights for the Rivermen and kicked off a set of five games over the next 13 days between Peoria and Chicago.
After a scoreless first period it only took the Rivermen 1:26 to put a goal on the board in the second. Dave Spina's shot was kicked away by Mannino and Cracknell put the rebound through Mannino's legs for his sixth of the year.
The Wolves tied the game on Darren Haydar's 21st of the year at the 10:23 mark of the second. Haydar's converted on a 2-on-1 down low in the offensive zone, lifting a shot over the blocker of Jake Allen. Tim Miller and Ryan Garbutt, who had three assists in the game, picked up the assists on the goal.
The Wolves took the lead early in the third and never looked back scoring three unanswered goals to start off the period. Scoring first was Haydar with his second of the game and team leading 22nd at 3:34.
Paul Postma scored on a five-on-three power play for the Wolves just 1:53 later. Postma's 10th of the year, and eighth power-play goal, came on a one-time shot from the right circle.The Wolves added another special-teams goal, shorthanded from Fredrik Pettersson, his eighth of the year just 2:03 after Postma's tally.
Brett Sonne added his third goal of the year for the Rivermen with 49 seconds left, but Jason Krog put a shot into an empty net 12 seconds later to close out the scoring.
The Rivermen were unable to convert on each of their five power play chances while the Wolves scored once on their seven chances.
