Strong First Period Leads Stingrays to 4-1 Win at Greenville

GREENVILLE, SC - Four goals in the first period, including two from forward Stephan Vigier, earned the South Carolina Stingrays (28-17-4-2) a 4-1 win over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits (24-20-6-0) Friday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Forward Brett Cameron extended his point streak to eight games, collecting a goal and two assists in the victory, and South Carolina goaltender Vitek Vanecek stopped 31 shots.

The Stingrays opened Friday's game with the club's best first period of the season. Vigier started the scoring, collecting his 13th goal of the season on the power play. Cameron centered the puck to Stingrays teammate Derek DeBlois. The pass redirected to Vigier on the right side of the ice, and he beat a sprawled Greenville goaltender Allen York to make it 1-0 Stingrays at 2:41.

The power play would continue to lead the Stingrays on a Bobby Shea goal at 8:33. DeBlois, celebrating his 25th birthday, moved the puck back to the blue line. Shea snapped a shot that beat York over the blocker to make it 2-0 Stingrays. The goal was Shea's fourth of the season and new addition Kelly Zajac also assisted.

Cameron would extend the lead with his team-best 17th goal of the season at 11:04, flipping a rebound past York who was out of position after denying Cameron on an initial rush. The goal ended York's night. He was lifted after allowing three goals on nine shots.

Vigier scored his second goal of the game on a rebound off a David Pacan shot to make it 4-0 at 15:39. New netminder Mackenzie Scapski denied Pacan's first attempt, but Vigier's backhand found the back of the net to make it 4-0 Stingrays.

Daren Dziurzynski had the lone goal for the Swamp Rabbits, scoring on the power play at 19:28 of the first period to make it 4-1 South Carolina.

Dziurzynski's tally would be the only goal Vanecek would surrender all evening. The goaltender was sensational, including making several impressive saves while facing 15 Greenville shots in the second period. The Washington Capitals prospect earned his ninth victory of the season with his performance.

After five goals in the first period, both teams failed to score in the final 40 minutes of action Friday. South Carolina outshot Greenville 34-32 on the evening. The Stingrays went 2-for-5 on the power play while Greenville was 1-for-7.

The Stingrays rematch with the Swamp Rabbits on the road tomorrow at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to head to King Street Grille-Northwoods for the Watch Party.
