Mychan's Hat Trick Not Enough in Eagles 6-5 Loss at Kalamazoo
February 19, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
(Kalamazoo, MI) - Eagles forward Jesse Mychan recorded his second hat trick of the season as Colorado outshot the Kalamazoo Wings 38-30, but it was not enough as the Wings edged the Eagles 6-5 at Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo on Friday.
Colorado opened the scoring in a wild first period when Mychan took a beautiful feed in the low-slot from linemate Johnny Lazo and beat Wings goaltender Joel Martin to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead just 1:38 into the game.
Kalamazoo would grab a goal of their own less than two minutes later, as forward Justin Thomas deflected a shot from the point past Eagles goalie Clarke Saunders to knot the game at 1-1.
The Eagles would jump back on top just 28 seconds later with Mychan collecting his own rebound on top of the crease and firing it into the back of the net to give Colorado the 2-1 edge. That lead would become bigger when forward Trent Daavettila finished off a 2-on-1 short-handed rush with his 17th goal of the season to make it 3-1 Eagles.
A Colorado turnover would put Kalamazoo back on the board, as Wings forward Ludwig Blomstrand wired a wrister from the top of the circle that beat Saunders and trimmed the Eagles lead to 3-2 with only 6:34 having been played in the period.
The Wings would find an equalizer in the closing minutes of the period when a delayed penalty was called against Colorado, which allowed Kalamazoo to fire a shot in transition that would be stopped by Saunders, but stuffed into the net by defenseman Anton Cederholm to tie the game at 3-3.
The Eagles broke the 3-3 tie 29 seconds into the second period, as Mychan completed his hat trick, scoring on a breakaway to put Colorado back on top 4-3.
Only 2:13 later, Kalamazoo forward Tyler Shattock sent a wrister from the left wing boards past Saunders to knot things back at 4-4.
As time began to wane in the middle frame, Wings defenseman Brett Ponich jumped into the rush down the ice and finished it off with a goal that would ultimately chase Saunders from the game and give Kalamazoo their first lead of the night at 5-4 with 4:07 remaining in the second period.
With goaltender Eric Levine now in the game for Colorado, Taylor would again deflect a shot from the blue line to light the lamp and give the Wings a 6-4 advantage with only 36 seconds left in the period.
Heading into the final period the Eagles bit back, as forward Curt Gogol unfurled a wrist shot that found its way past Martin and brought Colorado back within one with Kalamazoo's lead sliced to 6-5.
Colorado would pull Levine for the extra attacker, but would get no closer as they would lose by a final score of 6-5.
Colorado went a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, but were held 0-for-7 on the man-advantage in the loss.
The Eagles continue their four-game roadtrip with another match-up against the Kalamazoo Wings on Saturday at 5:00pm MST at Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Tickets for groups of 15 or more start at just $14 per seat and can be purchased by calling the Eagles ticket office at 970-686-SHOT (7468).
