Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, NY - February 19, 2016 - For the third consecutive game and the fourth time in the last five contests the Jackals went past regulation defeating the Adirondack Thunder tonight in the shootout, 2-1. Colin Jacobs scored the lone goal in regulation and also added a shootout goal with Cason Hohmann scoring the shootout winner. C.J. Motte made 37 saves to earn the victory.

The first period featured both netminders as the Jackals fired 17 shots on goal and the Thunder recorded 11 shots on target but C.J. Motte and Drew Fielding turned aside each chance in the opening frame.

The Thunder struck early in the second period to break the scoreless contest as Quinn Smith raced down the right wing side and backhanded a shorthanded marker past C.J. Motte at 3:45. Smith's third goal of the year came unassisted. The Jackals answered and knotted the contest 1-1 later in the middle frame when Justin Bernhardt drove into the zone down the left wing side and curled in the corner finding Colin Jacobs in the high slot for a quick wrist shot top-shelf over the shoulder of Fielding for his 11th goal of the campaign. Elmira out-shot Adirondack 13-6 in the second period and entered the third period with a 30-17 shot advantage.

For the second time tonight, the two teams combined for 28 shots on goal in a single period without scoring a goal. Each team earned scoring chances in the final 20 minutes of regulation but couldn't break through in the tied contest. The Jackals fired 13 more shots bringing their total to 43 in regulation but Fielding withstood the final barrage. The Thunder recorded 15 shots on goal in the third period but C.J. Motte stood tall sending the game into overtime.

Neither team was able to end the game in the extra frame as the Jackals recorded one shot on target and the Thunder, who had a four-on-three power-play for two minutes in overtime, fired six shots on goal but Motte manned the pipes and forced a shootout.

In the skills competition, Dana Fraser went first and was robbed by C.J. Motte who flashed the glove out across the goal line pulling the puck away from the net while laying on his back. Colin Jacobs shot first for the Jackals and converted with a silky set of hands. Peter MacArthur went next for the Thunder and scored on his chance tying the shootout at 1-1. Justin Bernhardt went in the bottom half of round two and beat Fielding but not the post, as his shot rang off the pipe. Ryan Lomberg shot in round three for the Thunder and was stopped by Motte with the blocker, setting up Cason Hohmann with a chance to win the game. Hohmann made a shifty move on the forehand and beat Fielding to send the Jackals to victory.

C.J. Motte stopped 37 of 38 shots faced and two of three shootout attempts to earn his 14th win of the season. Drew Fielding turned aside 43 of 44 shots faced and one of three shootout attempts suffering the shootout loss.
