Cyclones Fall in Weekend Opener
February 19, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
Moline, IL - The Cincinnati Cyclones (25-20-3-2) fell to the Quad City Mallards, 6-2, on Saturday night. Forwards Nick Huard and Branden Gracel scored the goals for the Cyclones, who see their four-game winning streak snapped.
After the Mallards took a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals from forward Kyle Follmer and defenseman Guillaume Gelinas, Quad City continued to pressure the Cyclones offensively in the second tacking on goals from forwards Brady Brassart and Sam Warning.
The Cyclones turned up the offensive pressure in the second, getting a number of quality scoring chances, including a few odd-man rushes, however they could not find the back of the net, and the Mallards took their 4-0 lead into the locker room after 40 minutes.
Cincinnati turned up the offensive pressure in the third, and 1:23 into the frame while on the power play, forward Joe Pendenza sent a pass from behind the net to Huard who was all alone in front, and he ripped a shot past Mallards goaltender Brody Hoffman, cutting the Cyclones' deficit to 4-1.
After Follmer gave the Mallards a 5-1 lead a few minutes later with his second of the night, the Cyclones found the back of the net once more, when Gracel took a pass from forward Seth Ambroz and skated in on Hoffman and jammed the puck into the net, pulling Cincinnati back to within three goals, 5-2, with less than four minutes left.
That was all the offense the Cyclones were able to muster, as Warning added his second of the night with less than two minutes left, and the Mallards skated to a 6-2 win.
The Cyclones were outshot on the night, 35-27, with goaltender Andy Iles stopping 25 to take the loss. Netminder Brandon Whitney came in in relief to start the third, and he stopped four of the six shots he saw.
Cincinnati wraps up their weekend series with the Mallards, and three-game road trip on Saturday night. Faceoff is scheduled for 8:05pm ET.
