Brampton Beast News Release
BRAMPTON, ONTARIO - Wheeling Nailers forward Riley Brace scored the go-ahead goal at 6:48 of the third period and added another into the empty net in the dying seconds of the game as the Nailers edged the Brampton Beast 4-2 at the Powerade Centre on Friday night.
Chris Auger and Luc-Olivier Blain lit the lamp for the Beast and Kenny Reiter was rock-solid in his Beast debut and kicked out 22 saves.
The Beast got off to a rocky start early in the first period as Adam Krause entered the zone with speed on the right wing and sent a slap shot beyond the outstretched blocker of Reiter for the game's opening goal just 14 seconds into the game.
Reiter quickly settled down and stopped the remainder of the nine shots he faced in the period, as the Nailers took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Beast started the second period with a renewed energy and didn't have to wait long to tie the game. With Wheeling's Andrew Cerretani in the box serving a double-minor for high-sticking, David Ling took advantage of the extra space and found Scott Jacklin waiting behind the goal line. Jacklin one-touched a quick pass to a wide-open Chris Auger in the slot. Auger wasted no time burying the puck behind Nailers starter Franky Palazzese to tie the game at 8:48.
Less than a minute later, the Beast continued to press and were once again rewarded for their efforts. The newly-reassigned Mac Bennett settled down the puck in the slot and sent a backhand shot toward the goal. Luc Blain was on the doorstep and redirected the shot behind Palazzese at 9:21, giving Bennett his first career ECHL point and giving the Beast a quick 2-1 lead.
The Beast lead would last until the 17:12 mark of the second period when Jordan Kwas located a rebound in close to the Beast netminder Reiter and shovelled home his fourth goal of the season, tying the game at two heading into the third period.
The Nailers regained the lead just under seven minutes into the third period as Riley Brace finished off a nice passing play at 6:48, with Cody Wydo and Adam Krause drawing the assists.
But the Beast didn't quit. They threw everything they had at the Nailers goaltender throughout the third period and outshot their opponent 11-8 in the extra frame but were unable to find the equalizer.
With Reiter on the bench for the final minute of play, Brace iced the game with his second of the night with just 4.3 seconds remaining in the third, ending any hopes of a Beast comeback.
