Gameday: Adirondack at Elmira

February 19, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Adirondack Thunder News Release

TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Tonight is the seventh meeting of the season between Adirondack and Elmira, with the Thunder holding a narrow seven points to six advantage, with each team winning three games. The two opponents are squaring off for the first time at First Arena since the Thunder posted a 1-0 shutout on Sunday, January 17 as a part of their ECHL Record shutout streak. The two sides will see each other four more times after tonight, including a rematch tomorrow in Elmira.

LEAVING HIS MARC: Adirondack forward Louick Marcotte has led all Thunder scorers against Elmira this season with four goals and five points in five games played, with his four tallies leading all skaters on both teams. Marcotte's +3 rating is also tops on the Thunder. The Quebec native scored the first goal of the 2015-16 ECHL season back on October 16 at First Arena, as a part of a two-goal effort.

FIELDING OF DREAMS: The Thunder got a boost between the pipes yesterday as they acquired goaltender Drew Fielding from the Brampton Beast, returning Fielding to where he began his professional career. The Burlington, ONT native has appeared in seven games with Adirondack this season, where he compiled a 5-1 record with a .950 save percentage and a 1.46 goals against average.

ONE AND DONE: The Thunder had reinforcements for Tuesday's game against Wheeling in the form of forward Ben Johnson and defenseman Joe Faust, but the return was short lived as both players were recalled by the Albany Devils on Wednesday. Faust has been a staple of the Thunder's defense this season, with 36 games played, while Johnson has collected six points (3-3-6) in 13 games up front.

TENACIOUS D: The Adirondack Thunder have maintained their position as one of the ECHL's top defensive teams, sitting third in the league with 117 goals allowed. The Thunder trail only league leading Missouri (101) and Eastern Conference leading Florida (110) in the goals allowed category. Adirondack is also tied with Reading for the league lead with eight shutouts, with Thunder netminder Drew Fielding responsible for two.

IN THE THICK OF THINGS: The Thunder remain in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race, despite a slow month of February to date. Adirondack currently sits in a tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference, six points clear of ninth place Elmira with three games in hand. This weekend's back-to-back with the Jackals marks a good test for both teams as the Thunder look to remain in a home ice advantage position and chase down Manchester for the East Division lead.
