Walleye Sunk by Komets 5-2

(Fort Wayne, IN) Shane Berschbach scored twice but Toledo was unable to keep up with the quick strike offense of the Komets in a 5-2 loss at Fort Wayne on Friday night. Toledo has an overall record of 30-14-2-3 and 13-9-2-2 on the road. The Komets will visit the Walleye Saturday night.

The game went scoreless for most of the first period until Fort Wayne found the back of the net at 16:41. Just twelve seconds later, Jamie Schaafsma beat Walleye goaltender Jeff Lerg with a wrist shot for a 2-0 Komets lead after one period.

Toledo dominated nearly the first ten minutes of the second period, out shooting the Komets 9-0. Shane Berschbach (16th) took a pass from Joe Sova and scored to pull the Walleye within a goal at 5:51 of the second. The Fort Wayne offense got amped up when they scored at 9:18 of the period followed by another goal at 10:32. Mike Embach scored on a rebound at 18:18 of the second for a 5-1 lead for Fort Wayne after two periods.

Berschbach collected his second goal of the night at 13:58 of the third period on the power play. Austin Wuthrich dropped a pass from the corner in front of the net the Berschbach deposited.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg stopped 16 of the 21 shots he faced as his record is 20-6-1-2 on the season. Jake Paterson replaced him to start the third period and finished with 12 saves. Toledo was held to 2 shots in the first period which tied a season low for shots in a period that came on December 31 at Cincinnati. Tonight's loss was the 200th in Walleye history (234-200-47).

Walleye Transaction: Prior to the game today, Toledo signed forward Patrick McCadden. McCadden has skated the last year and a half with the Columbus Cottonmouths of the SPHL. In 40 games this year, he had seven goals and six assists.
