Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Having watched their lead atop the American Association's North Division shrink to a single game, the Winnipeg Goldeyes weren't going to let it evaporate completely Saturday night.
The Goldeyes relied on a solid effort from their pitching staff to dispose of the Sioux Falls Pheasants 3-1 before 5,124 spectators at Shaw Park.
With the win, the Goldeyes remain a game up on the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks for first place in the division and push the Pheasants two games back, while also breaking a five-game losing streak.
Winnipeg scored the game's first two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Josh Mazzola led off with a double and scored a batter later on a Kyle Day triple. Day then scored on a David Narodowski double.
In the sixth inning, Luis Alen scored on a wild pitch to give Winnipeg a 3-0 lead.
Sioux Falls scored its only run in the seventh inning to break Goldeyes starter Todd Privett's shutout.
Mazzola led the Goldeyes at the dish, going three-for-four. He was the only Winnipeg player to register more than one hit.
Privett picked up his first win as a member of the Goldeyes in his second start with the team. He went six and two-thirds innings, striking out six. Dexter Carter pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save, while Zach Baldwin and Kaohi Downing also contributed out of the bullpen.
Sioux Falls starter Mitchell Clegg took the loss.
The second game of this four-game series goes tomorrow afternoon at Shaw Park. Winnipeg will start Chris Salamida (1-2, 4.47), while Sioux Falls counters with Rod Scurry (3-2, 3.51).
Coverage on TSN 1290 begins at Noon with 55 with Forney. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
Fans attending tomorrow's game are encourage to come early for the first half team photo giveaway and autograph session on the field from 12:30-1 p.m. Former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Doug Brown will also throw out tomorrow's opening pitch.
