Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have the Winnipeg Goldeyes' number.
On Friday night at Shaw Park, the RedHawks came back from a 3-2 deficit with a pair of runs in the eighth inning to beat the Goldeyes 4-3 in the final game of a four-game series. With the win, Fargo swept the series and won its seventh straight game from the Fish at Shaw Park this season.
With the loss, Winnipeg loses its fifth straight game and falls to 26-20, but remains one game ahead of Fargo and Sioux Falls in the race for first in the American Association's North Division.
"Their (Fargo's) bullpen was special this week and their defense was as good as I've seen it," said Forney. "That (Zach) Penprase at shortstop was sensational and that guy (Marcos) Rodriguez at first was making some great plays. They were very good.
"We've just determined that we can't win by scoring three runs in a game. It's just not enough. We scored three in the second inning and then nothing else. You just can't win doing that."
Winnipeg opened the scoring in the second as Luis Alen and Kyle Day singled and then Josh Mazzola hit a three-run homer to straight away centerfield.
Fargo put up a run in the third off starter Matt Rusch and another in the fourth, but Rusch gave the Goldeyes a great opening six innings. He struck out 10 and left the game with a 3-2 lead.
But in the eighth, Billy Spottiswood was tagged for a pair of runs and for the third time in this four game series, the Goldeyes took a lead into the eighth and couldn't hold it. Winnipeg led 3-1 in the eighth in the first game of the series and lost and then led 3-1 in the second game for the series and lost.
Fargo reliever Tony Davis (1-0, 0.00 ERA) got the win while Tom Boleska picked up his league-leading 13th save. Spottiswood (0-2, 5.06) suffered the loss.
The Goldeyes will open a four-game series with the Sioux Falls Pheasants on Saturday night. Todd Privett (1-3, 4.89 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg.
Game time is 6 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play and also seen on Shaw TV.
