Diablos Complete First Sweep Of Season With 3-2 Win Over Laredo
July 7, 2012 - American Association (AA)
El Paso Diablos News Release
EL PASO, TX- El Paso overcame a two-run deficit with three runs in the sixth and finished off a four-game sweep of the Laredo Lemurs with a 3-2 victory in front of 3,119 at Cohen Stadium.
The Diablos have now won nine out of their last 11 games and are just one game under .500 in the 25 contests played for manager Tim Johnson.
The latest victory may have been the most impressive, as El Paso overcame a slow night at the plate with strong and sometimes spectacular defense, stingy pitching and, eventually, timely hitting.
Starter Reymond Cruz (3-3) allowed two runs in the second to spot the Lemurs a 2-0 advantage, but shut down the opposition the rest of his six solid innings with some help from the defense behind him. Left fielder J.J. Muse made a spectacular diving catch to rob the Lemurs of a run in the fourth, and the Diablos twice cut down runners attempting to score at home plate.
Trailing by two, the Diablos made a winner of Cruz by taking the lead in the sixth. Patrick Arlis' bloop single scored two runs to tie the score, and Jordan Marks' bouncing hit to left plated Arlis to give El Paso a 3-2 lead and hand a loss to Lemurs starter Mark Haynes (2-2).
With Cruz out of the game, the bullpen made the lead stand despite several rallies by Laredo. Reyes Dorado struck out Anthony Scelfo to strand a runner at third in the seventh, and Tim Adleman got out of a similar jam in the eighth. Adleman's cause was aided by Mitch Einertson, whose throw home to Patrick Arlis on a single by Stephen Pearson forced runner Stephen Douglas to overstep the plate. Arlis then applied the tag to keep the Diablos ahead.
Marcel Prado pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save.
The Diablos have won four in a row for the first time in 2012 and also recorded their first sweep of the year by finishing off division rival Laredo. The team will take on the Worcester Tornadoes in El Paso's only interleague set of the season beginning Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
