Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - What started as a pitcher's duel ended in a lopsided loss for the Sioux Falls Pheasants, who fell to the Kansas City T-Bones Friday night, 8-3, in Kansas City.
The T-Bones scored eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings on their way to their third win in the four-game series. They broke a scoreless tie in the fifth when Pheasants' starter Alan DeRatt (2-3) allowed a lead runner home by throwing away a ball while attempting to put him out at third base. Justin Bass hit two-out, two-run double later in the inning.
In the sixth, the T-Bones (27-21) loaded the bases with nobody out and finished with five runs on a bases loaded walk, a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run by Devin Goodwin.
DeRatt allowed just three singles and did not walk a man through the fourth inning before the fatal fifth. He allowed nine hits overall and seven runs in five innings, leaving after four batters in the sixth. DeRatt walked two and struck out three.
Kansas City starter Devin Anderson (3-4) allowed just one hit and faced the minimum number of Pheasants (25-21) through the first six innings. The only run he allowed was a leadoff home run by Cristian Guerrero in the eighth inning, his league-leading 13th of the year.
The Pheasants scored two runs in the ninth on back-to-back doubles by Jonny Kaplan and Jake Taylor and Cesar Nicolas' RBI single. But T-Bones reliever Steve Toler struck out the final three Pheasants to end the game.
Guerrero's home run was his only hit, and Jonny Kaplan was 2-for-4.
Kansas City took three of four games from the Pheasants, who remain one game behind first-place Winnipeg in the North Division.
The Pheasants begin a four-game series with Winnipeg at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, in Winnipeg. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM and www.kwsn.com.
