St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The start of Friday night's game was delayed by an hour and 12 minute rain delay. The game was worth the wait as Robert Coe hurled his second complete game of the season as the St. Paul Saints defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs 2-1 at Midway Stadium in front of 4,241.

The 24-year-old Coe, who made his professional debut last season and was primarily a catcher in college at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, was incredible all night long. In just his 11th professional start Coe hurled his first ever 9.0 inning complete game of his career. He tossed a 7.0 inning complete game shutout on June 5 this season in the first game of a double header against the New Jersey Jackals. On Friday he threw 113 pitches, 69 for strikes and after the first inning he didn't allow a runner into scoring position.

In the top of the first Joe Spiers led off the game with a double to left and with two outs John Alonso tomahawked a high fastball into left field for an RBI single that gave the Saltdogs a 1-0 lead. Coe would allow just two hits in an inning one more time. In the seventh he gave up a leadoff single to Stephen Holdren, but he got Jimmy Rohan to ground into a double play to end the inning. After a single to Tommy Collaro, Coe struck out Salomon Manriquez looking to end the inning. Coe retired the side in order in the ninth and ended the game emphatically with a strikeout of Rohan. Coe allowed one run on six hits while walking two and striking out eight.

The Saints tied the game at one in the bottom of the first when they put together three straight singles with two outs. Jim Rapoport started it as he extended his streak of reaching base safely to 27 games. Ole Sheldon followed with a single and Willie Cabrera knocked home Rapoport with a single.

The game stayed tied at one until the sixth when the Saints scored with a little help from the Saltdogs. With two outs Tanner Townsend struck out, but the ball was in the dirt and skipped to the backstop allowing Tanner to reach on a wild pitch. He stole second and Alex Garabedian blooped a single into shallow right-center that scored Tanner and proved to be the game winning run.

The Saints welcome in the Sioux City Explorers on Saturday in game one of a four game series at 7:05 p.m. The Saints are TBA and the Explorers start LHP Alain Quijano (2-3, 2.57). It is Day Two at "The Cabin." The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and inside the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
