Guelph Storm News Release

Things are good in Storm City.

Garrett McFadden scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, Givani Smith netted two and Jacob Harris and James McEwan each had a goal and an assist in front of Michael Giugovaz's 35 save performance as the Guelph Storm defeated the Barrie Colts 5-2 Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The win was Guelph's third in four games and have now earned points in six of their last seven games.

After giving up the first goal, the Storm scored four unanswered goals to propel themselves to their second straight victory.

Barrie's leading scorer got the ball rolling on the score sheet. While on a five-on-three power play, Kevin Labanc roofed a wrist shot just over Giugovaz's shoulder and under the crossbar from the left side of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Under six minutes later, Guelph tied the game.

McEwan netted his fourth goal in the last two games and team-leading 18th when, skating neck-and-neck with a Colts defender down the left side, put a slap shot into the far bottom corner of the net past goaltender David Ovsjannikov.

The teams finished the first 20 minutes with Barrie leading 18-8 in the shot department, but the next three goals belonged to Guelph.

In the middle frame, the Storm would take their first lead of the night when McFadden received the puck at the blueline, took a step forward and let go a slap shot through a screen to the right side of the net.

The marker was the only one between the two teams in the second period and set fans up for a four-goal third period.

3:17 into the final frame, Guelph added a cushion to their lead.

After breaking away from a Barrie defenceman, Smith and Harris skated into the Colts zone on a two-on-one where Smith dished the puck across to Harris who tapped it past Ovsjannikov.

The goal was Harris' fifth point in his previous two games.

With 9:20 remaining in the game, Smith made it a three-goal lead for the Storm.

From the goal line to the left of the Barrie net, Smith lifted the puck between Ovsjannikov's shoulder and the crossbar as it crossed the line, giving the home team a 4-1 lead.

Kody Gagnon scored with 3:05 remaining to bring the Colts within two, but Smith's second goal of the evening into an empty-netter would seal the deal and give Guelph a 5-2 victory.

Final shots were 37-24 for Barrie.

Giugovaz made 35 saves in the win while Ovsjannikov stopped 20 shots.

The Storm are back at it tomorrow when they travel to London for a game against the Knights. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
