Saginaw Spirit News Release
SAGINAW, MI. - Despite a 41-save performance from Evan Cormier, the Saginaw Spirit lost 3-1 against the Niagara IceDogs on Friday night.
In the first period, the Niagara IceDogs scored two consecutive goals before the Spirit found their legs. At 4:34 of the opening frame, Graham Knott opened the game's scoring, giving the IceDogs a 1-0 lead. Johnny Corneil reinforced Niagara's lead at 13:01, with help from Josh Ho-Sang and Josh Wesley. The Spirit were granted their first power play opportunity thanks to a high sticking infraction on Pavel Jenys. The Spirit capitalized on their first power play of the evening, after Artem Artemov set up Tye Felhaber to notch his 9th goal of the season and cut Saginaw's deficit in half. Shots in the first period favored Niagara 10-15.
Both Saginaw and Niagara were scoreless throughout the middle frame, keeping the score held 2-1 in favor of the IceDogs. Niagara was granted the only power play opportunity of the period, but Saginaw was efficient in fighting off the IceDogs. The visiting IceDogs carried play throughout the majority of the second period, outshooting the period 16-3.
The 2-1 score continued to hold for the Niagara IceDogs until the last 5 seconds of the final period. With 49 seconds left to go in the game, the Spirit were whistled for too many men on the ice and sent the Spirit penalty kill unit to the ice. In hopes of tying the game, the Spirit summoned Evan Cormier to the bench to gain the extra attacker. With 5 seconds remaining in the contest, Jordan Maletta slipped the puck into Saginaw's empty net and secured a 3-1 win over the Saginaw Spirit. Despite the loss, Saginaw's Evan Cormier showcased an outstanding goaltending performance, stopping 41 of 44 shots from the Niagara IceDogs. The Spirit finished the night with 17 shots on net.
