January 8, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Sudbury Wolves News Release
The Wolves hosted their divisional rivals, the North Bay Battalion, Friday night for their second of three home games this week. It was an exciting game that had Wolves' fans on the edge of their seats, with the Wolves' taking the match 3-2 in overtime.
The Wolves and Battalion played a scoreless first period, with the Battalion leading in shots on goal 24-8 after the opening 20 minutes.
Early in the second period, DMITRY SOKOLOV scored a beauty on a breakaway to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead over the Battalion. Mikkel Aagaard picked up the assist on the play. The Battalion came back to tie the game up at one half way through the period, when Brett McKenzie put the puck past Wolves' goaltender ZACK BOWMAN. The Wolves regained their lead shortly after when BRADY PATAKI redirected COLE MAYO's slapshot past Battalion goaltender Jake Smith. The Wolves headed to the dressing room with a 2-1 lead, but trailed the Battalion in shots 41-24.
The Battalion wasted no time in tying the game up in the third period as Cam Dineen scored less than 2 minutes into the final frame. Both teams had a number of chances to seal the victory in the third, but Bowman and Smith stood tall in net, to bring the game into overtime.
RYAN VALENTINI was the hero for the Wolves in overtime as he sniped the winning goal past Jake Smith to give the Wolves a 3-2 victory. Final shots on goal were 51-45 in favour of the Battalion.
The Wolves are back in action Sunday as they host the number one team in the CHL, the Erie Otters at 2:00pm. This game is sponsored by CAA. Kids 12 and under accompanied by an adult will receive admission for only $7.00.
