Attack Take Down Sting in OT
January 8, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack saw a four game losing streak come to an end in Sarnia on Friday, Jan. 8.
A three point performance by Ethan Szypula helped lift the Attack to 5-4 overtime win over the Sting, who made waves around the OHL after acquiring former Ottawa 67's captain Travis Konecny earlier this week.
Bryson Cianfrone would be the overtime hero for the Attack, who picked up their first win of the year over Sarnia in three attempts and improved their record to 17-15-5-2 in the process.
A torrid pace to start the game saw the Attack and Sting play almost seven full minutes to start the game without a whistle. The end to end action would come to a pause though, with Owen Sound being sent on a Baywest Nissan Powerplay at 8:49 of the first.
But it wouldn't be the Attack who were able to take advantage of the man advantage.
Causing a turnover at the blueline, Sarnia's Brandon Lindberg opened the scoring just before the halfway mark of the frame, beating Michael McNiven on a shorthanded breakaway.
That 1-0 lead wouldn't last long for the Sting, however.
Tracking down a loose puck off of a Kevin Hancock shot was Ethan Szypula, who was able to maneuver around the Sarnia cage before tucking the puck in behind netminder Justin Fazio to tie the game up with 6:51 to play in the opening frame.
Szypula would then give the Attack a one goal lead, but not until late in the 2nd period.
Coralling a high, bouncing puck, Szypula was able to split the Sting defence before roofing a forehand to put Owen Sound up 2-1 with 1:29 to play in the frame. Szypula's 2nd of the game would come on assists from Trent Bourque and Nick Suzuki, and come just 29 seconds before Jacob Friend added to the advantage.
Using a blast from the point, Friend tallied his 2nd of the year and put Owen Sound up by a pair with only 50 ticks separating the Attack and Sting from the intermission. Adding onto already an impressive offensive performance was Szypula, who picked up the lone helper on the play.
But the scoring wasn't done there.
A crazy end to the middle stanza finally wrapped up when Travis Konecny scored on a snapshot with just three seconds left on the clock, sending the teams to the break with Owen Sound up by a score of 3-2.
The Attack would hold onto that 3-2 lead until the 8:41 mark of the 3rd when Konecny's 2nd goal of the game tied it up and sparked a waterfall of tallies by both sides.
Less than two minutes after the Sting made it 3-3, Attack forward Kevin Hancock was sprung on a breakaway and made no mistake, restoring Owen Sound's one goal advantage thanks to the outlet pass by Matthew Struthers.
Sarnia would tie it though, and Travis Konecny's hat-trick marker with 8:43 remaining in the game would inadvertently force overtime as neither squad could score before the 3rd period came to a close.
Owen Sound was offered a chance to end it before the extra frame though.
With just 2:12 remaining, Sarnia forward Hayden Hodgson hit Petrus Palmu in the head behind the Sting net and was assessed a five minute major for his action.
While they weren't able to capitalize on the major penalty before overtime, the Attack made sure Sarnia paid for it in overtime.
Overage forward Bryson Cianfrone would pocket the winner for Owen Sound, ripping a snapshot over the glove of Sting goalie Fazio to end the game. Cianfrone's 10th of the season was assisted by Thomas Schemitsch and earned him Mac Taylor Corporation 3rd Star of the Game.
Ethan Szypula's three point effort was enough for 2nd star honours while Sarnia's Travis Konecny was named the game's 1st star thanks to his hat-trick.
The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 33-31 for the Attack.
Owen Sound wraps up their weekend with a battle against the Kingston Frontenacs at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre on Saturday night.
Tickets for the 7:30pm puck drop can be purchased at the DJ's Furniture Attack Box Office, online at www.attackhockey.com, or by calling 519-371-7452.
