Soo Greyhounds News Release

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON- On a night when the Hounds held the second-most offensive team in the OHL off the scoresheet for most of the game, two goals in six minutes would take an extra point away from the club.

Travis Dermott's second goal of the game, the latter in overtime, provided Erie a 2-1 victory over the Hounds.

"I'm not angry with our kids with our effort. I thought it was ok sometimes, I thought there were some guys that were competing well" began Hounds Head Coach Drew Bannister when asked about his overall thoughts.

"Overall I'm kind of vanilla on it other than we got the point. I thought it was a game we could have won. And I'm kind of disappointed that we couldn't win it" he added.

Opening the game with just four shots in the first period, their best chances on Jake Lawr seemed to have come in the opening half of the period.

BOBBY MACINTYRE struck the post just 5:40 in before MEDRIC MERCIER later found MAKAR TOKAREV in front who got tied up and foiled on a chance to capitalize.

And while TJ Fergus was assessed a match penalty for slew footing, the Hounds were unable to capitalize on the five minute major penalty in the scoreless first period.

Hounds forward BORIS KATCHOUK came out with numerous chances in the first five minutes as the Hounds matched their first period shot total with atleast five during that span.

The scoring would open on the first-half of an Alex DeBrincat minor penalty before the period was ten minutes old.

As Jordan Sambrook tried to clear the puck from the side of his own goal, the puck hit off of KATCHOUK cutting across in front and ended up behind Lawr giving the Hounds the lead at 8:28.

The powerplay goal was Boris' 12th goal of the season and 4th on the man advantage.

Netminder BRANDON HALVERSON would stop all thirteen shots he faced in the period and all twenty-four to that point of the game as the Hounds led 1-0 through forty minutes.

The final 34 seconds of an Erie powerplay would carry over to the third period and be successfully killed off by the Hounds.

Then with three minutes gone in the period, BOBBY MACINTYRE (Whitby, ON) was srung in on a breakaway but wired a bullet shot wide of the goal in his latest attempt to provide the Greyhounds a cushion.

The Hounds penalty kill would remain perfect negating an Erie man advantage at the midway point of the period before the game would be tied with under five minutes to play.

Travis Dermott wired a wrist shot on the fly, past BRANDON HALVERSON at 15:17 to pull the Otters on even terms.

The goal came on Erie's 34th shot of the game and would force the two teams to overtime.

There, just 1:25 into the extra frame, the Hounds GABE GUERTLER was tagged with a double minor for high sticking putting Erie on the 4-on-3 advantage.

Thirty seconds into the man advantage Dermott scored his second of the night and 4th of the season to take Erie out of the Soo with a 2-1 victory.

"Discipline was an issue with us all game, it wasn't just the last one. I thought we took a couple needless penalties and overall our PK was great for us" stated Bannister when asked of the overtime penalty.

"You keep taking needless penalties like that, against a team like that, they are going to hurt you and in the end they did" he added.

While taking a point from the game, the Hounds record moved to 17-16-5-1 on the season, good for 40 points.

And while both Saginaw and Flint lost on Friday, the Hounds gained ground on their two division opponents but with an Owen Sound victory fell a point behind the Attack and into 7th in the Western Conference.

"It could have went either way really. It was a game that was there to be won most certainly. I thought Brandon was fantastic again tonight, he was on his game" said Bannister.

"It's disappointing when you get a performance from your goalie against a team like that we still come out with a point which is a positive sign but you'd like to have two" concluded the Hounds Head Coach when asked about playing the top ranked Otters and having a chance to have the game.
