South Carolina Stingrays News Release


The Stingrays finished up their 2006-07 season with a road game in Gwinnett and a home game finale against Texas.

The Stingrays were in a must-win situation when they traveled to face the Gladiators on Friday night. Despite the early 1-0 lead and two goals from rookie Micheal Haley, the Stingrays could not overtake Gwinnett. The final score was 4-2 including an empty net goal in the waning seconds of the third period.

With their pride on the line, the Stingrays returned to the North Charleston Coliseum for what would be their final game of the season on Saturday night against the Texas Wildcatters. In a fantastic effort with goals from five different players, the Stingrays won their last game with a decisive 5-1 final score. Goaltender Daren Machesney recorded 39 saves in the victory.

Team News:

The Stingrays ended the season at 36-27-9 for 81 points. They finished in 6th place in the South division, one win away from making the playoffs. The team was nine games above .500 with a .563 winning percentage.

The Stingrays ended up in 8th place in the conference and tied for 12th place in the League.

Regular Season Special Teams:

The Stingrays were tied for 4th at home on the power play converting 19.2% of the time, and ended last in the league on the road only converting 12.1%. Overall, the Rays finished 15th with a 16.4%.

For the penalty kill, the Stingrays were 11th at home with 84.0%, 8th on the road with 84.9% and 7th overall with 84.4%

The Stingrays averaged 3.47 goals a game this season, which was 8th in the league, and are allowed an average of 3.49 goals a game, 17th in the league.

Regular Season League Leaders:

Cam McCaffrey's 18 major penalties ranked him fourth in the league.

Cail MacLean's 17 power play goals ranked him fifth in the league.

T.J. McElroy is second among rookies for minor penalties with 45 penalty minutes as well as tied for first for shorthanded assists, with three.

Nate Kiser remains third among defensemen in penalty minutes with his 222 and tied for fifth in major penalties with twelve.

Davis Parley was third in wins with 31. He finished first in minutes (3522), second in saves (1741) and first in overtime wins (5).
