South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Johnstown, PA - The South Carolina Stingrays scored three unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Johnstown Chiefs by a final of 3-1 at the Cambria County War Memorial, in a rematch of last Wednesday game.
After losing 4-3 in overtime the last time these two teams met up, last Wednesday, the Stingrays wanted to take the momentum they gained after last nights win over Wheeling. Both teams came out strong, and skated an even first period. After 20 minutes of play, which included a couple of big time saves by goaltender Davis Parley, the game was scoreless.
At the beginning of the second period, it appeared that it would be more of the same. But at 7:49 of the second period the Chiefs took the lead 1-0 on Rob Drummond's second goal of the game. After 40 minutes of play, in what had turned out to be a defensive battle, the Chiefs retained their lead.
In the third period, the Stingrays got into gear, and pulled away from the Chiefs. Cail MacLean scored his second goal of the season, a power play goal, at 2:07 of the third period. The goal was assisted by Matt W. Reid and Pierre-Luc O'Brien. Not much later in the period, the Rays scored a goal while skating 4 on 4. Stephen Werner grabbed his own rebound, and gave South Carolina the lead 2-1. Werner's second goal of the season was assisted by Pat McNeill. A power play goal at 18:28 was the clincher, when Tommy Maxwell found the back of the net from Nate Kiser and O'Brien.
The winning goaltender was Parley, making 31 saves on 32 shots. Parley improves his record to 2-0-1. Getting the loss was Andrew Penner, who made 21 saves on 24 shots. He falls to 0-2 on the season. The Rays went 2 for 10 on the power play, and killed off all 8 of the short handed situations they faced.
South Carolina travels to Elmira, NY to take on the Jackals tomorrow evening, in what is the final game of this road trip. Game time will be at 4:05 with the Benito's pre-game show starting at 3:50.
