Columbia Inferno News Release

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Charlotte Checkers (3-1-0-0, six points) exploded for three third period goals, including two empty-netters, to beat the Columbia Inferno (1-3-0-0, two points) 5-2 Saturday night in front of more than 3,700 people at the Carolina Coliseum. The Checkers took the lead about four minutes into the first period when defenseman Ryan Constant broke into the offensive zone on a two-on-one, decided to keep the puck, and fired a heavy wrister over Jeff Jakaitis' blocker shoulder. Charlotte padded its lead almost eight minutes into the second period when center Joe Barnes took advantage of a defensive breakdown and an ill-positioned Jakaitis, firing into the blocker side of a mostly empty net. Columbia cut Charlotte's lead in half about nine minutes later when defenseman Bryan Rodney flipped a hard wrister from the point that eluded goaltender Daniel Manzato's outstretched glove. The Checkers ensured the Inferno wouldn't chip into the lead any closer when center Mike Ouellette scored his first of two goals, skating into the zone and chipping the puck past a sprawling Jakaitis to give the Checkers a 3-1 lead. Center Mac Faulkner narrowed the game to 3-2 when his wrister from the top of the far circle beat Manzato's glove, giving him his first goal of the season. When the Inferno pulled Jakaitis with about 90 seconds left on the clock, Ouellette and winger Nathan Gillies combined to score a pair of empty net goals. Jakaitis finished with 20 saves on 23 shots, while Manzato stopped 33 of 35. The Inferno return to play the third game of a five-game homestand when they host the South Carolina Stingrays on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Kids of all ages are encouraged to come in costume for trick-or-treating on the concourse prior to the game.
