Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gwinnett Gladiators collected a pair of second-period power play goals, while Jeff Campbell notched two assists to help the Gladiators past the Augusta Lynx 2-1 on Saturday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
The Gladiators and the Augusta Lynx skated to a scoreless tie in the first period, as Gwinnett was able to outshoot the Lynx by a 15-6 margin in the period. Both teams traded scoring chances in the first period with the Gladiators Campbell missing from the off-post as Augusta netminder Nathan Marsters was caught out of position. Later in the period, Gladiators netminder Craig Kowalski was able play an odd man Augusta rush perfectly, forcing Augusta forward Matt Johnson to clank the puck of the far post and wide and keeping both teams scoreless.
Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead on the Lynx with a power play goal by Jim Jackson just 4:22 into the second period. Parked on the off wing, Jackson picked up a loose puck and flipped it past Marsters for the power play goal. Campbell and Jon Awe had the assists on the goal for the Gladiators.
Dirk Southern's first goal of the season gave Gwinnett a 2-0 lead on the Lynx at the 12:11 mark of the second period. Parked in the slot, Southern took a centering feed from Campbell out of the corner and flipped the puck past Marsters for the marker. Campbell had his second assist of the game for the Gladiators while Derek Nesbitt also had an assist on the goal for Gwinnett.
Augusta got on the board in the third period with a shorthanded goal with less than five minutes left in the period. Tapping the puck past a Gladiators defenseman at the blueline, Chase Watson then beat Craig Kowalski for the unassisted shorthanded goal for the Lynx at the 15:33 mark of the period. Augusta could get no closer as they tried to pull Marsters in favor of an extra attacker but were shorthanded for the final two minutes of the contest.
Gwinnett continues to be successful on the power play posting both goals in the win on the man advantage as they went 2-for-10 on the power play while Augusta notched only marker shorthanded. The Lynx finished 0-for-6 on the power play in the loss. Kowalski collected 23 saves in the win while Marsters posted 38 in the losing effort.
