Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
Victoria, BC - The Las Vegas Wranglers (4-1-0, 8 points) were defeated by the Victoria Salmon Kings (2-2-0, 4 points) 4-3 at the Save On Foods Memorial Centre on Saturday night. Victoria winger Wes Goldie registered a hat trick as the Salmon Kings ended the Wranglers 17-game regular season wining streak (dating back to March 10th of last season). The Wranglers charged late with two goals in the final three minutes, but the surge fell short as the Salmon Kings beat the Wranglers in regulation for only the second time in four seasons. Forwards Adam Cracknell, Brandon Kaleniecki and Peter Ferraro each scored in the defeat. Victoria goalie Billy Thompson stopped 34 Las Vegas shots for the win. Wranglers goalie John Curry suffered his first loss of the season, stopping 26 shots. Las Vegas will return home to host the Utah Grizzlies and "Pink in the Rink" this Friday at 7:05 pm at the Orleans Arena.
Victoria netted the only goal in the first period of play as defenseman Dylan Yeo gave the Salmon Kings the 1-0 lead with 3:06 remaining in the period. Yeo fired a shot from the point that fluttered through traffic and over the left shoulder of Las Vegas goalie John Curry.
In the second period, Las Vegas tied it up at 12:39 with a goal by Captain Peter Ferraro. The Wranglers worked the puck around on a rush heading into the Victoria zone. Chris Feraro centered for Bruce Mulherin, who quickly played the puck to the left wing for Peter Ferraro. The right wing snapped home his three goal of the season, tying the game 1-1. Victoria countered late in the period with a shorthanded goal by Wes Goldie. Las Vegas defenseman Mike Madill fired a shot from the point that Goldie blocked. The puck squirted out to center ice and Goldie scooped it up. The Salmon Kings forward took off on a breakaway, beating John Curry at 16:27 and giving Victoria a 2-1 lead after two periods of play.
In the third period, Wes Goldie continued to poor it on with two more goals. Goldie's second goal of the night came off a face-off at 5:21, as he snapped a shot over the blocker of Curry for the 3-1 Victoria lead. With Las Vegas defenseman Jason Dest in the penalty box, Goldie struck again. At 13:20, Matt Kelly found Goldie on the back door for the hat trick. Las Vegas charged back late as winger Brandon Kaleniecki scored his first goal of the season at 16:52, trimming the Victoria lead to 4-2. The Wranglers added another late tally as forward Adam Cracknell scored his third goal of the season at 18:33 on the power play, bringing the Wranglers within one goal at 4-3.
The Wranglers will return home on Friday, November 2nd to host Utah at the Orleans Arena at 7:05 pm. Las Vegas will wear pink jerseys for next Friday's game as part of Pink in the Rink. The jerseys will be auctioned after the game with a portion of the proceeds going to Breast Cancer Awareness.
