South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays began tonight hoping to bounce back from last night's tough loss against the Texas Wildcatters. Unfortunately, the Stingrays were defeated by the Columbia Inferno by a score of 6-3.
"We were really out worked tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "We came out strong, but in the second period we were totally overmatched."
The Rays got off on the right foot by taking a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by Pierre-Luc O'Brien at 13:48 from Steve Pinizzotto and Trent Campbell. But less than a minute and a half later, they would find themselves down 2-1, after Columbia scored two goals in just :30 seconds. Josh Johnson was removed from the game at that point, in favor of Davis Parley.
The second period was dominated by the Inferno. At 3:03 they scored their third goal of the night, and just :13 seconds later, they made it 4-1. Before the period would come to a close, the Rays would find themselves down 5-1.
There were definite signs of life in the third period, as South Carolina came out firing and scored two goals to cut into the lead. At 4:44, Travis Morin got his team leading 28th goal of the season from Scott Romfo and Pinizzotto. At 10:07 Cail MacLean made the game that much more interesting by scoring his 17th goal of the season from Sean Collins and Morin. After pulling Parley in favor of the extra attacker, the Inferno got an empty net goal to push the score the 6-3, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Todd Ford who stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Davis Parley who in the final 44:29 stopped 20 of the 23 shots he faced. Josh Johnson stopped 10 of the 12 shots he faced in the 15:55 he played. The Rays went 2-4 on the power play while killing off five of the six short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on the Augusta Lynx at 4:00 P.M.
