Devils Hold Off Nailers 4-2
March 1, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - For the first 58 minutes, goaltender Jason Smith turned aside every shot the Nailers tested him with. Aaron Clarke's goal with 1:43 left in regulation changed that and almost changed the outcome of the game. BJ Radovich followed with a goal of his own 29 seconds later to put the Nailers within one but that was as close as they would come.
The Trenton Devils scored an empty netter with 57 seconds to play and ended the Wheeling Nailers chances to complete their late third period comeback. The 4-2 win for the Devils sets the stage for a rematch on Sunday at WesBanco Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Trevor Kell opened the scoring at 7:08 of the second with his first of two on the night. Jason Bonsignore set him up for a one-timer that finally got through Curtis Darling after 20 straight saves to start the night.
Andrew Leach put the Devils up by two a mere 2:17 seconds later this time with Kell adding a helper. Kell secured his number one star status with his 14th of the year at 13:27 of the third.
Clarke and Radovich made things interesting down the stretch but Jim Henkel iced the game with his empty netter.
Darling stopped 37 saves in a losing effort while Smith turned aside 28 in the win. Neither team managed a power-play goal as Wheeling went 0-for-4 and Trenton was 0-for-7.
The two teams will faceoff at 6:05pm on Sunday for Pups-and-Pucks Night at WesBanco Arena. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the game at no additional charge. It's also a Sunday Family Funday and fans can skate with the team after the game. Call 304-234-GOAL for more information or visit www.wheelingnailers.com.
