Dayton Sweeps Weekend Series Over Elmira
March 1, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Elmira, NY- Yannick Tifu's trip back to Dayton turned out to be a short one, as he was already called back up to the AHL before tonight's contest. It didn't seem to dampen the Bombers' (25-19-5-5) attitude, as they came out firing during the first period. In a period full of penalties (6 for Dayton, 9 for Elmira), both teams were able to get on the board as they headed into the locker room tied at one. Elmira (31-17-3-4) started the scoring first when Trevor Hendrix earned his 7th of the season at the 1:20 mark in the period. The Bombers didn't wait long to answer, as Chris Eade came straight out of the penalty box to lead a breakaway and beat the Jackals goalie to tie the score at one. The breakaway was set up by a beautiful pass by Masahito Nishiwaki that hit Eade in stride, and he capitalized for his sixth goal of the season A five-person fight, including the Bombers Mike Berry and Corey LeClair, highlighted the period as it drew a total of 44 penalty minutes for both sides. Rejean Beauchemin, in net for the Bombers tonight, stopped 12 of 13 shots in the first period.
Ryan Smyth notched his 13th goal of the season at the 10:32 mark. The goal came unassisted and turned out to be the lone goal of the second period. The Bombers outshot Elmira in the period 14 to 12, with Rejean Beauchemin again stepping up big to stop all the Jackals' shots in the period. The second period also saw its share of penalties as both clubs spent six minutes in the box.
Ryan MacGregor, who had a goal taken away from him in the second period, got it right back less than four minutes into the third. MacGregor, who was set up very nicely from Matt Beaudoin and Scott Kelman, earned his second goal of the season to broaden the Bombers lead. That would be all Dayton needed as Beauchemin stopped all 14 shots that the Jackals threw at him for a total of 38 saves for the night. Your Dayton Bombers earned all three stars for the night, with the number one star going to Rejean Beauchemin and the other two going to Ryan Smyth and Chris Eade. The Bombers don't get to celebrate for long as they hit the road tonight and head to Reading for another North Division showdown, with face-off tomorrow set for 5:05 P.M.
The Bombers return to action at the Nutter Center on Friday, March 14, and Saturday, March 15, against the Trenton Devils, and Sunday, March 16, against the Cincinnati Cyclones for a three-day St. Patrick's Day weekend! The Bombers will wear specialty jerseys that will be up for bids on Saturday night (available for pick up after the game on Sunday) at a live post-game auction on the flight deck.
