Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Reading, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs began the month of March with a 5-3 victory over the Reading Royals on Saturday night.

P.J. Atherton opened the scoring for Reading with a power play goal at 13:55 of the first period. Greg Gallagher deflected the initial shot by Vladimir Dravecky, but the rebound went directly to Atherton, who scored his fifth goal of the year against Johnstown, giving Reading a 1-0 lead.

Ryan Garlock knotted things up at one goal each with his 21st marker of the season. Garlock took a feed from Randy Rowe just below the right-wing circle and rifled a wrist shot by Terry Denike. Alex Imbeault also earned an assist, and the goal for Garlock lengthened his team-leading point streak to 12 games.

The second period was another back-and-forth affair which saw the Royals score first, but the Chiefs got even again, and then some.

Joe Zappala made the Royals 2-for-2, at the time, on the power play when he hammered a rebound off of a Brock Hooton shot past a falling down Ryan Nie at 7:13. Once again, though, Ian Herbers sent out the line of Garlock, Rowe, and Imbeault after a Reading score, and once again they did not disappoint. Imbeault beat Denike with a wrister from the right wing just 47 seconds after Zappala's goal.

Garlock assisted on Imbeault's goal, and then picked up his second of the game with the Chiefs on the power play at 16:59. Garlock took a pass from Imbeault in the left wing circle and quickly got a shot off beating Denike through the five hole again. Imbeault returned the favor with an assist on Garlock's tally.

The third period went scoreless, thanks largely to the Chiefs killing a Reading 5-on-3 advantage that lasted over a minute, up until the 18:15 of the final frame.

The Chiefs and Royals combined for three goals in the final 1:45 in regulation, and Johnstown came out on top with two of the three. Jean Desrochers took a feed from Mark Tobin on a 2-on-0 rush to score at 18:15 of the third. It was Desrochers' team-leading 24th goal of the year.

Reading cut it to 4-3 at 18:50, with an extra attacker on, when Shawn Collymore wristed a shot past Nie's blocker. The Chiefs regained their composure, though, and Randy Rowed sent home an empty-net goal with 2 seconds left on the clock.

Ryan Nie picked up his 21st win of the season in net by making 34 saves, while the Chiefs power play helped him out by going 1-for-3.
