South Carolina Stingrays News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits scored three goals in the second period to claim a 3-2 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays on Friday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Friday's game was the first of a ten straight on the road for the Stingrays, and the victory was the Swamp Rabbits third win against the Stingrays this year.
After a first period that saw no goals, but three fights, Greenville opened the scoring only 3:53 into the second period. Sean Escobedo scored his first goal of the season on the power play from the slot. The puck popped back to Escobedo at the blue line. The defender walked in and beat a screened Vitek Vanecek over the glove to make it 1-0.
Bretton Cameron would score a goal in a similar location at 8:06 to make it 2-0 Greenville. The Swamp Rabbits captain stole the puck at the blue line. With traffic in front, and Vanecek screened again, Cameron snapped a shot that hit the cross bar and popped into the goal for his fourth tally of the season.
Greenville would score once more before the period ended on Kodie Curran's slap shot from the slot at 16:29 that made it 3-0.
The Stingrays nearly tied the game with a furious late rally in the final five minutes of regulation. Andrew Rowe scored a power play goal at 14:55 to get South Carolina on the board, banking a shot off goaltender Jeff Malcolm's right pad and into the net.
At 16:25, the Stingrays scored again to make it 3-2 Greenville. Joe Devin knocked a rebound past Malcolm's left pad to cut the Greenville lead to just one.
Malcolm came up with several spectacular saves late to preserve the win. He stopped 31 shots on the evening.
The Stingrays head to Atlanta to battle the Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday. Fans are invited to catch road games at the Official Watch Party Destination of the Stingrays, King Street Grille-Northwoods. All road games air at King Street Grille-Northwoods and fans 21 and up may enjoy a special offer of $3 Drafts, including Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Shocktop and Landshark during all Stingrays Watch Parties at King Street Grille.
