South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. The South Carolina Stingrays released their 2002-03 regular season schedule this afternoon. The Rays are set to play in their tenth anniversary season in the East Coast Hockey League. The two time Kelly Cup Champions will play a 72 game schedule beginning on October 11th.
The Rays will begin the new campaign on the road with games at Florence against the Pee Dee Pride on October 11th and at Greenville against the Kelly Cup Champion Grrrowl on Saturday the 12th of October. The team's home opener will take place on Saturday, October 19th against the Columbus Cottonmouths.
"Starting on the road can be both good and bad," said Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons. "With a new team and a new coaching staff it will be a positive to start the season away from home against two quality opponents to get a feel for where we stand."
The Stingrays will play in the Southeast Division once again. The Rays division has lost the Macon Whoopee, which has moved to Lexington, Kentucky leaving the Southeast with seven teams. The Columbia Inferno, the Columbus (GA) Cottonmouths, the Augusta Lynx, the Florida Everblades, the Greenville Grrrowl, the Pee Dee Pride and the Stingrays round out the seven-team Southeast Division.
Last season, the Greenville Grrrowl cleaned up the Southeast and went on to win the Kelly Cup Title for the first time, marking the second time that the Champion has come out of the Southeast in the last two years.
This seasons' schedule features a home game on March 18th against the Peoria Rivermen, a team that the Rays have never faced. The Stingrays road schedule will take the team to Reading, Pennsylvania for the first time ever, for a pair of games on November 22 and 23.
The Stingrays are selling a variety of season ticket packages. For more information call 744-2248.
