South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Rookie defenseman Sasha Pokulok scored his first professional goal and added an assist to lift the South Carolina Stingrays to their seventh straight win at home with a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over the Dayton Bombers in front of 8,133 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"We brought intensity that we needed in the second and third periods," South Carolina coach Jason Fitzsimmons said. "Pokulok jump started our offense and he made some nifty moves. We need to play the same way tomorrow (Sunday) at home against Texas like we did down the stretch in this one."
Dayton (22-16-4, 48 points) opened the score at 6:03 of the first period. Dmitri Chernykh scored on the shortside of goaltender Davis Parley, who was making his 21st consecutive start in net, cutting in from the left wing for his fourth tally of the season. Yannick Tifu, who extended his point streak to eight games, and Ryan Reid garnered assists.
Later in the first on a Dayton power play and another delayed penalty going against South Carolina, the Bombers' Mike Berry scored his 15th goal of the season from Chernykh and Tifu at 13:26.
South Carolina (25-18-3, 53 points) responded the second period. Pokulok made a nifty move and then buried his first professional goal beating netminder Adam Berkhoel. Assists went to Evan Schwabe and Josh Anderson at the 8:11 mark.
Evan Schwabe tied the score at 2-2 on the power play nudging the puck across the goal line for his 16th goal of the campaign. Jarrett Konkle and Pokulok had the helpers.
In the third, Stephen Werner scored the game-winner taking a pass from Chris Chaput and notching his seventh tally of the year. Peter Szabo also picked up an assist.
With 1:15 remaining in regulation, Cail MacLean put the game away with a power play goal for his 17th goal of the season from Szabo and Schwabe.
South Carolina went 2-for-7 on the power play, while Dayton converted on 1-of-8 with the man advantage. Stingrays outshot the Bombers 37-34.
The Stingrays remain at home for a 4 p.m. contest on Sunday against the Texas Wildcatters at the North Charleston Coliseum. The Carolina Ice Palace presents Sunday Kids Day, which offers a $5 ticket for each kid 12-and-under and postgame Skate with the Rays.
